Speaking of masks . . . I got my 2nd COVID vaccine shot yesterday. The Admiral is still waiting to get her first, since she is just a sweet young thing and managed to fall just below the eligibility age bracket (for now).

Back on topic . . . I am really excited that I got these particular riser blocks as they will have good cross flow and are made of iron. I did find the HGE brand of similar design, but they were aluminum . . . not a good match next to the iron.

BTW - i also plan on replacing the exhaust flappers . . . which are Merc # 807166A1. When I replaced them 8 years ago, I recall that they were a bit pricey ($50 each ).

This time around I found some for about $25/pair . . . Of course, as I work on the engines over the years, I have gotten less finicky about using OEM on some parts . . . this being one of those cases.

Picture time . . .

I reminded myself how much I hate pulling apart I/O exhaust systems . Anyway, I got the elbows off the port engine and will be proceeding to the starboard engine soon, which should go fairly quick, since I am now practiced up.

It seems that I am getting a little bit of spot rust inside the exhaust, it seems maybe from condensation. I checked a few of the exhaust valves with a borescope to see if they or the ports look rusty - They look fine.

I got to get some exhaust tube and a few new fittings and some radiator hose.

The exhaust flappers were pretty much toast and not really doing anything. I have some new ones to replace them.

The salt water has left some deposits in the exhaust, so I think I'll soak what I can in a bucket of barnacle buster to clean them up.

Yep Ted that's good old salt water...so far my original OMC Y pipe looks very good but I bought a beautiful fresh water used on on ebay just in case.

Quick Update . . .

A bit of re-engineering . . .

As I removed the old fittings, installed the plugs where needed, I did some test fitting of the riser extension blocks.

These are the kind that have 2 set of fasteners rather than the kind that use a long bolt thru all pieces into the manifold. As you can see the extension block will bolt to the manifold, but then has its own set of studs for mounting the SS elbow.

That is all fine & good, except for the remote oil filter mount. It will have to go on top of the elbow mounts as it did before. Sooo, the forward studs of the extension blocks on the left side of each engine will need to be about 1" longer.

Time to look for some extra hardware. . . I'll also need to get some new fittings and hoses. I'm leaving the starboard engine alone until I get this all figured out and the extra parts in hand.

Here is the left side 'stack' for test fitting. It actually gives a bit more clearance for the coolant return line which will go in the face of the riser extension.

That 4 inch exhaust hose is pricey

FWIW, 4" 4-ply kevlar turbo hose is half the price and twice as good and comes for about $120 a 4' stick ( has a 500F rating vs the rubber exhaust hose which is 2 ply, and only has a 250F rating ).

Question for the group. . .

I need to buy a few 3/4" NPT to 1" barb fittings for the extension blocks. Along the way, I have realized a significant amount of deterioration of a fitting on the open side . . .

Looks like this . . .


It splits the sea water coming from the HE and directs it to each elbow for exhaust cooling. Seems to be a Y-shaped Tee fitting with dimensions as shown. It was part of the SJE kit and is apparently made of copper, which is not so good for salt water.

I'm trying to replace it with something a bit more resilient.

Any leads on an approprite fitting?

Looks like a 1 inch Tee - crimp on 2 ends and solder on other

Add a 1 inch street 90 to 1 inch crimp

Could also do it with Brass Tee and barbed fittings

In plumber language, that fitting would be called a 1,1/4" x 1" 'reducing Y-tee'

Found it. . . Copper, but it will do the trick for another 8 years or so . . .



It was under 'marine cooling system accessories' . . .

While I'm on the subject of cooling systems . . . Are there any SAE/USCG requirements/spec's that I should be aware of as I replace hoses, etc. ???

Just want to make sure I use 'compliant' materials, if there are any marine specifics other than good quality reinforced coolant hose/fittings (automotive type).

Unable to say 100% but I have never seen/heard of cooling system Regs/requirements

The only thing I have found is SAE J2006 for the wet exhaust tubes
