Risers-mannifolds issue again.

Not sure if this is a question or a rant. Over 2 years ago I had a brand new manifold fail taking out my motor. I used Osco risers and manifolds but this time I used a GLM because the dealer did not have my manifold in Osco. Shortly there after I had an issue with the motor. When I pulled the plugs water came out. Pulled off (starboard) brand new riser and manifold and took it to my radiator shop that test these type of parts and they told me the manifold was leaking. The dealer I got the manifold from was of no help to me saying it must of been my installation. I boxed it and sent it to GLM. It took a little bit of yelling but they did give me a new manifold.

I now have a 2 year manifold and riser (starboard side) that is leaking. My port side has a trace of water also. last year that riser (port) had a nick in the metal housing separating my fresh water and dumped water in my cylinder. Replaced riser problem was solved. I started out with brand new risers and manifolds when I installed the new motor. Now problems again. It appears to be fresh water because I was having to add some water to my heat exchanger, but I would not rule out raw water in there also. What type of risers are you guys using for Volvo Penta with a Indmar- GM 5.7 and are you having as many problems as I. I have owned this boat since 2006 and have had problems for the last 6-7 years it seems like with leaking manifolds. I have gone thru about 4 sets (mostly Osco) The new motor has not overheated so I'm ruling out head gaskets. Just to be clear there is no water leaking externally. When the motor was rebuilt I installed all marine gaskets. this is getting old!

Hope you are not learning about the green leaker gaskets the hard way.

These green aftermarket gaskets are well known to fail very quickly. Particularly if installed dry in salt water. Google search "green riser gasket failure". Checkout ebay auction # 160412051306 (second picture) for example.

I personally use OEM (thin wavy ones) with perfect seal. Works and last.

So, your fresh water cooling system is a full system meaning it cools the manifolds? You do have coolant and not just water in your system right?

The non OEM manifolds/risers are know to have issues with the mating surfaces between the riser and the manifold. Either take them to a machine shop and have their surfaces planed or buy OEMs in the future. I never buy the aftermarket manifolds.

Yes I run antifreeze in my heat exchanger with it leaking it became a diluted but still had a green tinge to it.

So go with Indmar manifolds and risers? If the manifold manufacture makes both the riser and the manifold you would think they would match. But at this point I'm willing to try anything!

The gaskets I have used were from Osco. They don't seem to be leaking at the man/riser connection. I am going to pull them off and get them pressure tested that should show me were my problem is. (I hope)

One more thing. Would it be possible that your boat requires high risers and regular risers have been installed?

That's a good point. I will verify. The previous owner had a mechanic that maintained the boat. After a couple years (not sure how old those man/risers were) when I replaced them I used like for like parts.

First is the engine compartment cover allow enough clearance for higher risers? (Some manufacturers use a spacer instead of a high riser)

Valves that are not seating properly can also draw water backward into the engine from the exhaust.

Wow they look good. Ouch on the price. Are yours fresh water cooled?

I run a 1/2 system. There is only one water connection on these so raw water pumps through them while the block uses antifreeze. They are stainless, unaffected by saltwater and include a beefy anode for each.

I will do a compression check. That should tell me if I have bad valves...right?

Do a cylinder leak down test. That will tell you which valves. if you have a bad manifold, it will be the exhaust.
