I'm assuming you mean tiny gravel, almost sand? Sometimes debris gets around the valves and owners who don't know any better start filling the chambers without first blowing the sand, debris and water out and away from the valve. Use your air pump to blow the debris away before you open the valve to fill the chamber.
if you have the valve tool remover, remove valve, place tubes upside down, whatever is inside will fall.
