RODBOLT - PLEASE HELP!

Rodbolt, I have heard you are the resident expert, but any input would be great.
Here is my deal.....I take my motor (2004 Yamaha 150 4-stroke) into the shop for an annual service. I get it back, put it on the hose to check everything out and learn that whenever I put my motor barely in gear (as to idle into an area) it makes this tapping noise from the lower unit or prop in forward or reverse. When I rev the engine to 1000 rpm, it goes away. If I take the prop off, it goes away. Here is the question......is it my prop hub or something the dealer did to my engine? I took it back the following day, and they say my hub is bad even though it was fine when I took it in to my knowledge. This dealer has provided me horrible service, and I don't want to take it back but fear they screwed my motor up. The thrust washer is still on, and there is no play side to side or front ot back on the shaft/prop. The tapping is pretty loud and is definitely abnormal. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help guys.

Re: RODBOLT - PLEASE HELP!

Yes, I had them do everything, as I use this motor for charters. Changed plugs, filters, water pump, the whole nine yards.

then remove the lower unit, remove the water pump and reassemble the pump correctly. they messed up replacing the lock coller and retainer.
what your hearing is the drive shaft bouncing up and down at low speeds.
do a search on this forum for a step by step bolt by bolt water pump replacement for a 115, same procedure. takes about 45min to an hour.

Re: RODBOLT - PLEASE HELP!

The driveshaft locking collar may be the culprit, but many times running on a hose will allow the propshaft to move in and out while the propeller is spinning with no load on it.

Grab the prop (motor not running!) and push and pull on it. Hear the clunking noise from the normal shaft freeplay?

Run it in the water to make sure.

Re: RODBOLT - PLEASE HELP!

I cannot find the step by step directions (and believe me, I hope they are detailed as I know nothing about the inerds of this thing).

Seahorse, I tried moving the prop side to side to check the play in the splines, and front to back for the shaft. No spline movement at all and so little shaft play, it can't be it. It almost sounds like the motor is not going completely in gear.

Re: RODBOLT - PLEASE HELP!

never seen it on a 150, some of the 3.1 cases but not the smaller ones.
the pininion turns the fwd and rev gears and in nuetral the prop shaft is not connected,
in gear with no load it will bounce some due to the uneven firing pulses.
but its a rotational bounce were the clutch whacks the gear and the gear will bounce away from the clutch only to be whacked again at the next firing impulse. some of the 3.1 motors were very bad about it as they dropped a cyl at certain speeds.
try it again with the prop loaded before worrying to much.
