Rookie question.

Hey fellas...got a couple of easy ones for you regarding a '89 Johnson 9.9.

First, how do you remove the gear case fill and drain screws? When I tried I bent my two largest screwdrivers.

Second, should I be using a certain type of gear oil? I purchased some pennzoil 80w 90. It seems to be pretty universal.

Thirdly, does anybody know the spark plug gap on this motor? I am waiting on a manual to come in from my local dealer, but am wanting to do some maintenance in the next couple of days.

i don't have a manual for that motor so i don't have the correct gap, and i not going to guess. it takes a big long wide bit screw driver, (lowes & HD $5.00) also go by a dealer and pick up some new washers for the plugs, they are the #1 reason for water intrusion into the lower. 80/90 will work but not the best, the best is 80/90 outboard lower unit oil, has additives for water intrusion.

In addition, the plugs are champion
QL77JC4 at a recommended gap of .030. I would gap them a bit wider at .035 for better low speed and idle performance. It will not affect top end running. If the screws are really stuck, get yourself a handheld impact driver to get them out. It's the type that when you hit it with a hammer, it turns the screws out. Make sure to use a tight fitting screwdriver bit in it. High viscosity lube is available at Walmart and other marine stores..

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm gonna check out the impact screwdriver. I forgot to mention that the Pennzoil 80/90 I bought is lower unit oil. I will however, have to get some new plug washers.

Tip: Buy at least 2 extra washers. It'll save you a trip to the store the next time you want to change the lower unit oil. Extra sets are way cheaper than gas.
