Not to rain on your parade but if the transom is in this bad of condition I'd bet the stringers and motor mounts are having issues too. You should really investigate them as well. You have never stated if you have done that or not.

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

Thank you all for your comments.
I did take about 3 different core samples of the stringers and they are OK. good color.

WOG, He's good :) if you didn't though, definitely check the motor mounts out too.

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

woodnonglass,
thank you for your suggestion,
However, i did take 3 core samples of the stringers and they are fine.
My engine mounts are actually made out of aluminum so no worries there.
The weird thing is, I checked out many forums here and compared boat setups to mine and what i have is different.
for example, my deck is almost entirely fiberglass and it is thick. second, in the transom area, I have no foam around the stringers and they are exposed. off course, with a thick layer of fiberglass covering them. I still don't know if i have foam in other places.
is this usual?
I will post more pics tomorrow hopefully.
Thank you again

Your boat is under the 22ft mark so the manufacture would have to put foam of some kind in the hull.

Thats awesome your mounts are made of aluminum, you scored there and also on those stringers. :D

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

hey guys,
I de-skinned the stringers today just to make sure they were ok and as you can see in the pics, they are.
still tearing off the transom and it's going ok so far but slow. The deck looks good. I thought it barely had any wood but I was wrong. It looks like it is 1/2 inch wood with a layer of 1708 on each side. I am trying to take out the last 4 inches of the deck so I can make sure that I take out all the transom wood all the way to the bottom of the hull. Am I doing that right? isn't the transom supposed to go between the hull and the stringers?
well, Take a look guys and please let me know if i'm doing anything wrong.
oh, and I have a pic here of my engine mounts, they are aluminum so I never need to worry about them.

Thank you all in advance.

Note: The 3 holes you see in the stringer is the core samples that I took.

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

hello guys,
I have a question, if you can please help
the bottom 2 bolts of y gimbal housing are in bad shape and I plan to replace them.
Are they anode bolts? all I can find on ebay is " Mercruiser Alpha gimbal housing anode bolt kit gen 1 2", They these the correct bolts?
My outdrive is alpha one gen II so I know they match but should they be anodes?

Please let me know,
Thanks
Waldo

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

another question here guys,
instead of wood, Why can't I just put fiberglass? I mean keep laying layers of 1.5 oz fiberglass mat alone with 1708 on top until it's 2 inches thick. wouldn't it be strong enough? for sure it will never need work again :).
what do you guys think?

It sounds heavy and expensive.
Why don't you just use seacast or a simular material if you don't want to use wood?
I'm sure that the two lower bolts are anode.
Good luck

You have aluminum motor mounts, but they bolt the stringer in the same anything else does, so pull out the lag bolts and check the wood.

I can't think of any limiting factor except price... anybody else?

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

Hey guys,
Thank you for your replies,
I'm still debating if I wanna do that or not yet. I mean, I'm sure if i do fiberglass instead of wood, I will never have to worry about the transom again but as you guys said, it is more expensive. specifically when I have to make sure it's 2 inches thick.
I will have to do some calculations and then decide but for now, I'm almost sure it will be strong enough.
I mean think about it. If the hull, which i think is 1/2 inch thick, plus rotten wood, plus a layer of 1708 can be handle the pressure, wouldn't 2 inches of fiberglass handle it too?
I'm just taking my time with it right now since you know the weather isn't worm enough anymore to go boating, plus I have been dealing with a bulging disc in my lower back so I kinda have to take it easy :s.

Thanks a lot for your help guys.

Re: Rotten Transom. HELP :(

I finally took out all the wood from the transom today.
I couldn't work on the boat for a while because of work.
a couple of weird issues:
1- I can swear, some spots in the wood were not even touching the transom fiberglass/hull. check out the pics.
2- the bottom of the transom did not have anything to glue it down to the bottom of the hall or tap it. I actually found foam instead of glue :s.

Oh, and in one of my posts, I said I couldn't find any foam. Well, I was wrong, There was plenty. The reason why I couldn't see any is because under my deck, I found a second layer of wood that went only from the main stringer to the second stringer right next to it. It was wood, chopped strand mat, About 1/2 inch gap that had what I think was glue but in lines of about a finger wide, then the deck that had 1708 from both sides.

Have you guys seen anything like that?
from the threads I have read and seen, This is the first I've seen like this.
