Hi Guys, New member here. I have been looking through all the previous posts and like what you guys have done. I just recently sold my 12' Meyer and moved up to a 1973 14ft Starcraft semi-v. I have a couple of ideas for it that include wiring (6ga from front to back w/lights and a couple of accessories) and a bow cover or small deck in the front to mount a bow mounted trolling motor. I have cut a couple of cardboard templates but haven't came to any final decisions yet. Any and all comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't found a way to post pics on here yet but I'll post them when I do...

sure opened yerself up there man.... ;).
well, i like yer new boat.... when i was 16 i went to work in a boat like that..... almost had me a headon with someone else one night on the way home from work. neither of us had running lights. we both turned starboard at the last moment inadvertantly, just plain lucky on that one, anyways.... my suggestion is. if yer gonna be out after dark, put running lights on it...... also, put a towards the largest engine ya can ontoit... man them fishin boats with that design sure are fun with some get up and go. more hp is also a safety issue as they can catch a fair amount of wind and ya can be blowen off corse quite easy....... wecome to the fourm.....

Set your gear in different places while the boat is the water to experiment.
Ran one of those with a tiller 35hp one time what a blast!!

BTW is that a Holiday Rambler in the background of the first pic?

Re: Rowboat Mods...

i understand the covering the bow, but what are trying to accomplish under it? i would put battery under seat. what type troller, and main motor? 6 gauge is way to heavy for accessories.

Wiring: I have run the large gauge wire in pvc to protect them, on small open boats, like this. I ran it in the chine groove.

If you go ahead with the middle platform, I would remove the seat and make it all out of one piece of plywood. Reuse the support that is probably under the seat, and you will still need to make some custom brackets for mounting in the bow nose.

Re: Rowboat Mods...

Thanks for the replies and the warm welcome guys!

ebry710, I plan on using the boat mostly for bass fishing and alot of the places I take it locally have shallow ramps so I don't want to make it too heavy.

ziggy, Although I don't plan on using it too much in the dark I usually pull out of the water after dark and for that reason I am planning on putting running lights on her. Does anybody have any wiring diagrams I might be able to design mine from? I presently have an old Evinrude 9.9 that I plan on running until I can buy something bigger (I'm thinking something between a 18hp and a 25 hp).

JCF350, You have a good eye. Yes, that is a 1988 Holiday Rambler Presidential 27' in the background. We have been contemplating selling it this season if you're interested.

tashasdaddy, Most of the time I use my MinnKota 55lb trolling motor in the back and am looking at buting a used Motorguide 42lb bowmount for the front. The top bow cover I am thinking is to mount the bow mounted trolling motor unless I can block it up off of the bow seat extension. I haven't quite worked out in my mind which way to go yet but any enclosed storage space will be used to store the battery, life jackets and/or maybe the anchor. The 6ga wire I referred to will be used to run power from the battery in the front of the boat to the transom mounted 55lb thrust trolling motor. For the accessories I figured I would tap off the main line with smaller wire.

imported_John_S, I was looking at the chine groove myself to run the heavy wire from the bow to the stern. I planned on taking out the bow seat and making it all out of one piece of plywood I just cut the cardboard that way to see what it would look like. I have some aluminum angle to make the additional bow seat supports out of.

What type of hardware should be used? Does stain less steel have a reaction with aluminum?

Re: Rowboat Mods...

I am also looking for suggestions regarding seating. I presently have clamp-on mounts from my 12'er but quite frankly they suck. I want to use more of a permanent pedestal mount. The seats in my Starcraft are wood and I would like to have the seats mounted in such a way that they can stay right on the boat when it is being trailered but are easy to take off when the boat is being stored. I would like to have the pedestals for fishing and be able to remove them or lower them for cruising. With that said I think I would only need a 6" to 9" pedestal. Any thoughts?

Re: Rowboat Mods...

Welcome .

Stainless fasteners will work fine , especially since you are in fresh water .

Beware of removing that middle bench seat , as it is a structural piece .
If you do decide to remove it , you need to reinforce the hull with your new deck supports .
My advice is to leave it alone and use it to support the deck , add hatches in the area between the front and middle seats for storage and a livewell .

Don't put the deck higher than the seat tops , for stabillity reasons .
You want to keep the center of gravity as low as practical and still be safe .

You can use 1/2" exterior ply for the deck , coat with resin to seal it .
You could also use aluminum sheet , no thicker than .125" ( 1/8" ) , for something even lighter .
Drawback is noise , and , it is expensive stuff if you buy new .
Check your local scrap dealers , chances are you can find what you need , for ~ $1 a lb .
For the framing , aluminum angle is a strong lightweight choice .
Again , see that scrap dealer .

Since the hull is riveted , you may find some rivets needing re-bucked .
You can do this with a ballpein hammer and a block of solid steel , if you have a helper .
For a deluxe set-up , get a pnuematic hammer gun , and , a rivet set .
Check Ebay and search " rivet set " .
These are used for aircraft rivets , and , there are alway a lot to be had for cheap to reasonable , including the hammer guns and bucking bars .
I just got a set of 40 for under $100 , all sizes and lengths , including offsets for those odd corners .
You can also get them new for $5 - $50 each + shipping from many other websites .

For the solid rivets , search Ebay again , this time for "solid rivets" .
There are always lots of aluminum aircraft rivets for decent prices , all sizes /lengths / head types .
Grainger sells them for decent prices also .
Brazier heads are used if you are going through the hull , the flush heads (100 degree ) are great for the framing if you want to mount a deck on top of it .
You will need an approprite countersink if you use them , however .
Ebay again...

Consider mounting that battery toward the stern , no further forward than midship . Weight distribution is a vital consideration for these small craft .

If you are forward on the deck casting , those v hulls will make trolling a PIA , as the boat will be bow down and hard to keep straight when you casting from the forward deck .
The length of the leads for the trolling motor will be of little concern on a 14' , even if the battery is in the stern you will at most have to step up to 4 gauge wire with a troller under 50lbs thrust on your bow .

The elevated short deck at the bow is also great for mounting that trolling motor , + you can use the space between it and the lower deck for some semi-dry storage .

That 9.9 'rude should push your rig fine , just check the capacity plate before moving up .
That 14'er is probably rated for 20-25 horsepower max .

For wiring , 14 gauge is fine for accesory cicuits , (nav lights , courtesy lights , dock lights , bilge pump , livewell aereator pump , etc..) .
Get a marine rated fuse block for 6 circuits , and , a good switch panel .
A 40 amp manual reset circuit breaker should also go between the troller and the battery .
I like 1/2" sch 40 pvc for keeping those wires secured , split loom for tight bends .
FYI , you can bend PVC by heating it , then carefully bend to the desired angle/radius and hold untill it cools .
To prevent kinking , fill it with sand before heating and bending , pulling the ends of the piece while bending also helps . ;)

Re: Rowboat Mods...

if you are just using a hand control on the bow this works well .

Color and pattern looked familiar :D
Mine is a 1989 37' Imperial. It lives on the property on Orange Lake. This is it after it's been sitting there for a few months (time for more land clearing and FISHING!!! :D:D now that the water is up some)

Re: Rowboat Mods...

BTW Beware of ACQ and MCQ pressure treated wood as it is corrosive (don't know about other kinds). Found out the hard way and had to replace 6,0000 steel screws with stainless ones.

Re: Rowboat Mods...

Give this a look. I own the 1567 mirrocraft, and it sound like you and I fish similar lakes. I currently have a 20 hp on her, but might move back up to the 40 hp soon. The front end design might be just what you are looking for. My main battery is in the stern and my trolling battery is in the bow under the main platform. The little bow platform is not nearly as big as the one in the picture you have, just big enought to mount that trolling motor on an angle, and that is it. This will be a fun little project for ya.

Re: Rowboat Mods...

Thanks, I was getting boat hungry and my wife gave me the check book one day and said just go buy one. I left and came back two days later with this little setup. It had a 40 honda on it, but i changed it out for a 20 honda and a large trolling motor. I usually fish small lakes and rivers, so the large engine was not "needed" at the moment. I am considering trading that 20 back up to a 40 though. Or better yet asking the wife for the check book again and finding something new. Great little fishing boat, don't like the carpet....but not sure what else to put down in it.

Re: Rowboat Mods...

You guys are awesome! Keep the info coming!

I plan on using probably 5/8" or 3/4" plywood (not pressure treated because of hardware corrosion problems???) and sealing the top surface with some rubber torch-down roofing material (because I have it available for free) and then carpeting it. I may put a very small bow cover on it to mount a trolling motor on and make a casting deck out of the front seat area with like a glovebox storage area between the two.

I have the wiring in mind of how I want to do it and may be going to a two battery set up mounted mid-ship.

JCF350, Is your RV at the Orange Lake near me in NY or down in Fla?

Millwood, Sound like I want your old boat! What do ya think of this pic?
