I posted earlier; guess it didn't take. Trying again......

Renovating this awesome boat. The wood transom is rotted and needs replacing. Outdrive (merc) and motor (3.0 Chev) and in and out plates are pulled. Time to remove the back aluminum deck/cover and get the wood out.

I need advice on removing enough rub rail (hard rubber and aluminum channel) to lift the back aluminum deck off. I have the corners off. Before I start prying enough rubber off and out, and, (I assume) unscrew enough channel to lift the back, is there any advice out there for me?
Am I going about this rub rail removal the correct way?
What steps do I have to take to put it all back together and install?

The only other thread I see from you is on some decals which got answered???
I apologize if you're not getting the responses you need. Unfortuntely I'm not a tinny guy, I'll PM some of them and see if they can answer your question. Lots of StarCraft guys here.

You are going about it correctly. I was able to pull the insert out of the channel and then remove all the screws holding the channel on and then remove the channel. If your insert needs replacing, it can be purchased through a Starcraft dealer very reasonably. If you post pictures of what your doing, you will get a lot of help here.

Hey James, welcome to iboats! Ya got some photos of that cool new ride buddy?

OK, let's see about that transom.

1. Be very careful with that rubrail, they can easily be destroyed. Warming it up with a hairdryer and maybe some soap and water to help it come out, good moves. I pulled all of mine out for R&R but for the transom job you only really need to pry out the last 3 fee or so. The stern rubrail needs to come out so you can access the screws and take off the channel.

2. Back up your rig to a big stout tree.

3. Unscrew the last few feet of channel and wedge in a screw driver on each side. Now your stern deck can lift a little...

4. Slide the tail end of a Keeper Strap in between the transom skin and transom, bring it up through the outdrive hole and girth hitch the whole works. Top end of the strap gets hooked up high in your beefy tree.

5. Start cranking...

Caution: There always seems to be a rogue screw that ya missed or it could be stuck from corrosion. You'll get it.

6. Up...

7. And out...

8. Dispose of as you see fit...

Lots of great variations to this but you get the jest.

How to put it back together and a whole lot more details can be found in the Islander thread down in my signature there.

Have fun!

Great photos and advice. The campfire photos are great!
I backed the boat into my mother's barn that has all of my tools and room for I need for as long as I need it. I have hoists, chainfalls, tools, and a small tractor to pull the boat out to work under shade trees or back it in at night, or work on it inside during the rain. I've only been on this for two weeks, and nearly one week of that was spent out of town visiting one of my daughters and my new grandson, and so on. Now I'm back to work with a vengeance. The rubrail had me stymied, must admit. Thanks again.

Thanks CW. My earlier thread about the decals was answered. I posted a reply of thanks, but i now see that it didn't take as well. I must be missing something during my reply and post process. I'll brush up on this forum's tools. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Dave P. I'll explore these options. I have some pictures, but I'll take more and post.
It seems to take me two or more replies to these messages. I word- process my reply, hit 'post quick reply' and then check -nothing. So, I complete another and click on 'Post...Reply' again. Must be missing something. I work on-line a lot.
