I too had the stiff and splintery old rope in my rubrail. I kept looking for a low cost alternative in the boat stores, then found 3/4 " white synthetic roope (not sure what it is made of) at Home depot. I agree, it looks like the original is 7/8, but the Home depot solution cost me about $25. I pulled out the old and cleaned the channel (gotta do this thoroughly or your new rope will be black after installing) and then just used a soft hammer to tap the rope in all around. I tried to pull it throgh with no luck.
Now, this rope will not last another 20 years like the old, but my kids are no longer afraid to hang off the boat due to she splinters.
