Has anyone found a source for the rub rail rope on an 1850. Mine really needs to get new. I measured it and it came out to 7/8 with the calipers. I can find poly in black but not white.

Re: Rub Rail Rope

My rub rail is 1.6 inches high and 1" wide. it has a c channel shape to hold a 3/4 inch rope. It has one now but 22 years of sun has done a pretty good job of rotting the polypropylene.

I can find tons of yellow and have found black on-line. But I like the contrast of white in the black channel.

I may end up using nylon and pulling it out to bleach when it gets dirty.

Re: Rub Rail Rope

Belairbrian,

I too had the stiff and splintery old rope in my rubrail. I kept looking for a low cost alternative in the boat stores, then found 3/4 " white synthetic roope (not sure what it is made of) at Home depot. I agree, it looks like the original is 7/8, but the Home depot solution cost me about $25. I pulled out the old and cleaned the channel (gotta do this thoroughly or your new rope will be black after installing) and then just used a soft hammer to tap the rope in all around. I tried to pull it throgh with no luck.

Now, this rope will not last another 20 years like the old, but my kids are no longer afraid to hang off the boat due to she splinters.

Ken,
I'll take another look at Home Depot. Last time I looked they had tan in 5/8 and yellow in 3/4. Was the stuff you found on a bulk spool or packaged?

Next time your there could you see if you can find their part number?
