Running 2 Cycle with no oil

I just picked up my 17 foot Dusky from Dusky in Dania, FL. This is an 8 year old hull with a 88 Special Johnson. Apparently they didn't put oil in the fuel after draining the tank of my fuel. There was a blockage on the fuel pick-up. After running about 15 minutes, 5 minutes at full throttle the engine died rather rapidly. Upon restart I noticed that my old engine that typically smokes, produced none. I drained the fuel into a small cup and it didn't look like it had oil in it. I was able to get Dusky to come get the boat with a tank with oil in it. It ran fine after that. My question is how much damage was done by running with no oil until the engine quit running.

I would start by doing a compression check. That should give you a clue. I did this once and didn't suffer any problems.

Well my opinion is that it shortened its life by atleast half. Seen the results many times. You think it is OK and then after a couple of times out it starts to get sluggish. The bearings also pay a heck of a toll, you just can't see it by a compression test.

I've seen 2 strokes run fine for a short time after running without oil also, but soon after they destroyed themselves. Nothing like rod bearings floating around inside the motor, lots of $$$$.

This is when run with no oil, with some oil I've seen them live.

That sucks !!!
Compression check to begin. The fact it is still free and running is a big plus but what extra stress and strain that has been put on it is unknown. If the dealer is responsible as it appears then they should be liable for any and all related repairs that come from this. What is their stance on it right now ???

Fuel sample was not blue right, and you did save a sample with pix to back it up, and date stamped..?

A motor that siezes from no oil is usually junk. And they usually don't free up and run again. The piston skirts typically melt and sieze to the cylinder walls. Are you sure there is no oil?

I would insist the manager and you get a document of the situation, hopefully you and the manager and perhaps another witness together saw what the fuel looked like, agreed, the motor will have issues and you wont have piece of mind.Let us know how it goes,I think I would insist the heads be torn off to see the cyl.walls along with the comp test, but that does little for the rods and crank jornals
