Running Volvo Penta 4.3GL with outdrive removed?

I have a 1999 Larson SEI 186 with a 4.3gl and an sx-m sterndrive. I have some damage to my lower unit, and am in the process of removing the outrdrive. I am also preparing to winterize my boat for the first time by myself and am curious how I can give the system water with the outdrive removed? I have read some different things, but curious if anybody knows for this particular engine what would work?

You have to feed water to the impeller housing; there are a few ways to do that; one is to fab up a fitting for the garden hose and then have someone hold it into the water passage hole in the pivot housing and stick a rag in the bellows to keep water from the exhaust housing from spraying into the driveshaft bellows. The other way would be to make up a hose adapter to connect the garden hose to impeller housing itself, that is probably the better way.

On Volvos, I hook the hose direct on the raw water pump with a rig I made

However in the SX you can also connect to the hose between the outdrive and transom shield

Do you happen to have a picture of how you connect the hose directly to the water pump on a volvo?

I am going to try to take the drive off today or tomorrow and will probably ask you if you don't mind, to confirm I would be putting water in the correct spot?

Nothing special. It's a female hose fitting to 3/4" hose, a plastic adapter that connects 3/4 hose to 1-1/4" hose and it is connected to the inlet side of the raw water pump.

Sure thing! Post up a pic…
Alrighty…pretty proud of myself for getting this far! We’re you guys saying I could just feed water into the black hole that I’ve circled in yellow in the picture ?

Yes that’s how to do it. I would stick a rag in the driveshaft bellows because water may splash out of the exhaust bellows right underneath the driveshaft bellows.,

Got it, thank you. So the warm water from the engine comes out the lower exhaust bellows along with exhaust fumes ? Is that correct?

Yep at idle most will come out the bottom of the transom mount but some will come thru the exhaust bellows

Just make sure the hose stays in place because if it falls off the impeller will burn as well as the rubber exhaust hoses below the exhaust elbows.

I’m thinking this approach may be easier than trying to keep the hose attached at the back. Is this the kind of part that sits on the intake portion of the raw water pump? B595D4FC-15AE-4C56-9253-5625FBCC14FC.png

Have you done it this way before? Seems like that black part on transom mount is metal and I don’t want to scuff it with the hose …trying to think through plastic adapters that may work. Any suggestions?

That part is actually plastic. and they can crack and leak!
What I did was run my water hose to the thermostat housing but the OMC Cobra had the impeller in the drive unlike the Volvo so it was a bit simpler. If you like you can just disconnect the feed hose to the impeller, measure the ID of that hose, buy some matching hose about 3' long, connect that to your impeller and then adapt your garden hose to the other end of that hose...

You are overthinking it

If you feel uncomfortable just shoving a hose in there and securing with duct tape like thousands of people do, undo the clamp on the other side of that fitting you circled, then clamp it on your hose. You have to inspect the fitting anyway

Or if you want to make a hose rig like I use when running the motor on a stand, you need something like

And a section of 3/4 hose

And an adapter like this

And a section of 1-1/4 hose

And connect it to the raw water pump

Thanks for the detailed alternative

I am about 10 miles from my storage unit. What precautions would you recommend for trailering my boat with the outdrive removed?

I am thinking
- somehow secure the trim rams from moving around too much
- secure shift cable to prevent from moving around
- Duct tape contractor garbage bag over the transom mount to prevent crap from getting in the bellows

Any thoughts?

The rams won't go anywhere, even if you drive 3000 miles

Your over thinking stuff getting into the bellows, unless you back into the water, just won't happen

Other than making sure the boat is properly secured to the trailer, simply follow the speed limit and have working brakes on the trailer
