Behind that pulley under the red heat exchanger housing is your circulation pump. The heat exchanger is inside the red housing. The black plastic housing with the screw on cap is your raw water strainer. The coolant resevoir is the steel cap to the left of the strainer housing.

Thanks...I was able to download a service manual and now I understand how the two cooling systems work. Does the freshwater system (engine circuit) contain coolant or just plain water?

thanks!

Mine pumps water just fine. I put it in a big plastic bin or water and it stayed around 160-175 degrees!

My fuel pump just arrived today which is the last thing I need (until something else breaks) to get the engine done.

If you are still unclear on the different cooling systems in your boat:

-The freshwater system is a closed loop that contains antifreeze and operates much like your car's cooling system.

-The seawater/raw water system uses the impeller to bring in water from outside the boat and pumps it through the heat exchanger (red box) where the heat from the engine coolant gets transferred to the raw water. The two liquids never mix. Then the raw water is released into the exhaust where it travels back outside the boat.

hook your water source (hose etc...) directly to the intake on your raw water pump, vp dont like muffs, at least mine dont, change the impeller anyway it cant hurt but again hook your hose to the inlet on the raw water pump, you can also run water into a 5 gallon bucket on deck and then stick a short hose from intake on pump to bucket and it sucks the water from the bucket and i leave the hose filling the bucket, this will show the pump is working, get rid of those muffs they will not work for me either

When running on muffs, there is a large hole at the bottom of the outdrive that needs to be plugged, just behind the skeg. You can get a rubber stopper at the hardware store.

If water is circulating properly, then you will see water being sprayed out of the exhaust outlet flapper just above the prop, even at idle.
