'89 Suzuki 30hp (oil injection) starts right away after priming and runs just fine for 10-15 minutes before dying (either at idle or at speed). Re-priming seems to get it going again, but each time it gets a little shorter until you have to perform cardiac massage on the primer bulb to keep it running.

I assume either fuel pumping is getting weaker by the minute or there is a restriction or air leak somewhere.

-Gas bowl is still full when it stalls.
-Fuel delivery seems okay. Primer bulb is not suctioned flat. Filters, pickup tube, fuel fittings, gas lines, o-rings, tank vent all checked and function properly.
-Fuel pump is securely mounted and internal diaphragm looks intact, although a bit puckered. No sign of pump leaks. Internal pump valves all clean and sealing properly. Cleaned and re-sealed pump gaskets anyway.
-No obvious air leaks.
-Haven't got a gauge handy, so I'm presuming the compression is fine as both idle and WOT are as smooth as ever.

Okay you gurus, any thoughts on what's really wrong with this otherwise reliable engine?

I'm thinking of putting in a fuel pump re-build kit just on spec. Unfortunately it's not easy to find Suzuki parts up here in the Great White North and what you do find sure ain't cheap. Those seem to be common complaints with Suzuki everywhere and something I sure wish I'd been aware of before buying this engine new. Oh well, live and learn.

At the other end of the scale I'm slightly worried it could be related to warm compression loss affected by lack of oil injection. I guess running with 50:1 in the tank for awhile would test that theory.

Thanks for any help -Dave

[BTW I just recently tripped onto these great forums and I'm very impressed with the quality of advice given]

Hi Dave.
Sounds like you have tried quite a bit. Great.
Sounds like a carb problem.
Mix up some premix in a spray bottle. Next time it messes up, make sure your choke plate is open and spray a short burst of fuel directly into the carbs. If it starts, clean your carbs. Just because bowls are full doesn't mean that they are delivering fuel properly.
If motor has a choke on it, make sure it is open after warm up and it is not starving itself..
You could also try closing the choke slightly to see if motor will restart. Another sign of a bad carb.
Post back and let us know how you make out.

Re: Runs fine then quits -nothing obvious to me

Thanks for the advice Mike

As the motor dies suddenly with minimal warning I didn't see an easy way to shoot gas into three carb throats simultaneously for a good test as you suggested. But I figured after 12 years I owed the carbs a cleanout and inspection so I went with your suspicions. Everything was pretty much virgin inside. This is a triple carb setup so I had to hope I wasn't going to end up needing anything other than the original factory mix settings as I have no way to properly re-tune and balance the carbs other than by ear.

The good news is it fired back up right away and does run a fair bit smoother at idle. From what I've heard and experienced, Suzuki's aren't known for sustaining a good idle and consequently even the smaller engines aren't sought after much as trolling motors. Between a propensity for fouling plugs at low revs and the idle being overly sensitive to carb conditions I can now see why. I have no complaints at WOT.

The bad news is it didn't make the stalling problem go away.

My wife lucked out on a chat at an authorized Suzuki repair shop and he confirmed my earlier suspicions of a weak fuel pump that gets worse as the engine heats up. He'd sold the last diaphragm just that morning, but hopefully will have one back in stock when I get a chance to swing by in a couple of days.

Again, thanks for the help. I don't consider it a waste of time at all. If nothing else, it's always edukashumal.
