Re: Rust in Motor or Bad Solenoid?

Smoky, My '77 Merc 1500 had a single solenoid on the PTT unit. The schematic shows yours has two solenoids. You should stick with the two solenoids since the wiring harness is probably set up for two solenoids. The wiring harness on my '77 had much heavier wire on the down circuit, eliminating the need for the down solenoid.

It would be best if you bought the trim motor locally, so you can match 'em up. Pay careful attention to the length of the armature and the size of the flattened end, to make sure it matches your original one. The aftermarket PTT motor may be for more than one application, and may have an adaptor to make the armature longer, for your application.

Re: Rust in Motor or Bad Solenoid?

I walked by the boat today and just felt like trying to trim it up and it worked fine! It went up and down about 5 times and then went back to clicking again. Before it would work if I just shook the pump but not anymore. I'm trying to find a starter shop that will rebuild it for me. I wouldnt know what to do if this thing worked. Do I even have a trim relay? Anybody ever had this problem before?

You could have an open winding on the armature. if the motor happens to stop on the open winding, it wont turn until you wiggle it.

Is there anyway I can buy just the armature for my model pump.

I was checking all the connections earlier and one of the posts that holds a green and blue wire was very loose . the post moves in and out of the solenoid all of the way. If this solenoid is the problem would it cause the down solenoid not to work also?

a solenoid is a relay,,,,,jumper from the hot wire side to heay wire on other side of the solenoid that takes the solenoid out of the loop for testin purpose... Chris has stated this in a previous post

Re: Rust in Motor or Bad Solenoid?

I talked to an Auto Electric Shop today, they said they would rebuild the motor for me but if any parts were broken then they couldn't do anything because they dont have a source for parts. Does anyone know where I can find parts for my hydraulic motor? It seems the part that the brushes set in have gotten broken apart. I need the commutator head and brush set. There is no way mine can be repaired. I'm just hoping I can find the parts for the same model pump I have. serial is 76395a3. Thanks for all your Patience and Help!

Smoky, Crowleymarine.com or dougrussell.com sell a lot of old merc parts. They may have the parts you need. They will not be cheap however. If you want cheap, visit a outboard junkyard, and maybe you will have some luck, and they will have a used pump.

Price out an ARCO aftermarket pump. it may be cheaper than a new armature and brush set.

The Green and Blue wires are attached to the brushes. They are the directional determining wires....Blue (sky) Up - Green (grass) Down.

To determine if its solenoids or motor, run positive battery power to the green or blue directly. Also remove and check with volt meter or test light to see if power is coming thru the solenoids.

Looks like the 18-6763 Sierra part number is correct.
Also check a NAPA store for price using same part number thru NAPA Marine catalog.

I would bet your motor is probably shot. I have rebuilt them and done extensive bench testing and a week after back in the boat they die.

Thanks and yea as far as I'm concerned the motor is shot. Napas price was $384 I just wanted to make sure that this part would work as a replacement because Iboats doesn't accept returns on electronics. I just want to be 100% positive before I make the order.
