Before I get the new long block (GM L6 250 - OMC), I'd like to clean up the manifold. How can I remove the rust that is in there? There isn't a LOT of it, but I figured a cleaning would be in order...

Flush it? Chemicals?

Thanks!

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

I hear you, but looking at the rust didn't concern me. I would not even bother if it looked like a lot of rust, I'd just get a new one, but I really don't think it will be a problem. Right now, my plan is to flush it with some high pressure water.

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

A solution of muriatic acid will remove scale, however, I would not use anything but water & a suitable tool to loosen anything in it.....I'm with Bondo.....New engine, new manifold/riser.....If you are so confident with the condition of the old one.....Bolt it back on your 7 year old engine when the new one is done, seven years will not harm it on the shelf, if properly stored ;) .....JK

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

Gentlemen,
As a marine tech for most of my life, I can tell you that the number 1 reason without exception for a destroyed marine engine is the ehaust manifolds failing...hands down. Look in the discharge end of a manifold(or top of a center riser man.)You will see a large port for the exhaust in the middle surrounded by cooling passages...The center should be black and carboned up, the cooling ports usually rusty...if there is anything more than some minimal flash-rust in the center port TRASH IT!!! I REPEAT, TRASH IT!!!Flaking rust is a big red flag! Rust in the exhaust port is a clear indication that your manifold is leaking internally...bad enough while running, but when you shut down, the water runs into any cylinder which has an open exhaust valve...Cleaning an exhaust manifold is an invitation to catastrophic engine failure....and muriatic on cast iron is a big no-no, this will exacerbate any problem you already have and create problems you didn't have..DON"T DO IT!!! I have had several customers replace engines but just swapped the manifolds and destroyed brand new engines...a couple hundred bucks is a lot cheaper than a couple thousand for another engine....I pull the risers and check the ports once or twice a year,a five dollar gasket and some loctite 510 is a small price to pay to keep my engine safe...And even engines that have closed cooling are not immune from this problem, the raw water still exits via the exhaust system. Granted, salt water is harder on parts than say, lake water, but remember, even after you flush the engine on a trailer boat, the manifolds remain partially filled with water. Take a piece of cast iron and leave it out in your yard overnight if you want to see how long it takes cast iron to start corroding...In saltwater I see manifolds go away in as little as 2 years, fresh proportionally longer, but the fact that you mentioned that you have Log-style manifolds is the first clue that they are at the end of their serviceable life!
Do yourself a BIG favor and spring for new...
DON'T MESS AROUND WITH BAD MANIFOLDS ON A NEW ENGINE!!! If you don't want to take my word for it,ask any MARINE mechanic(not automotive)who makes his living repairing boats with more than a year or two experience...Seriously, bad manifolds make me way too much money...Don't let it happen to you...Good Luck and good boating.
Best Regards,
markvictor

Yep......in little pieces so you don't plug the toilet. If there that rusty, there soon to be junk. Washing out the rust just gives fresh metal to rust. I just trashed what looked like a good set of mans, wouldn't even leak when I filled them with water, but the milky oil, and sharp crack near the right man that sounded like a lifter made me get out the credit card.

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

New manifold it is!

Guys, as usual, thanks for the help!

Oh - I'll try to re-size my image (of the boat, that is)!

Seriously, thanks again! Since I put her in salt water about 95% of the time, you have taught me not to play games with this issue.

I'm so glad there is not a proportionate fee for the money I save by visiting this forum!!!

Anybody have a LINK to where I can get a new manifold? Again, OMC 165hp (GM L6 250) with a Holley 4-barrel on it.

Awesome forum!

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

Last summer my 81 140 was running hot so after many hours of trouble shooting i discovered that my manifold was pluged, a differant engine which was laid up for a few years, I removed the riser and it looked good there. So I removed the manifold and with a coat hanger and a high pressure washer I cleaned it out. I put it back together and tried it with muffs and no problem. Then I discovered my drive was #*#*ed. I'm still working on that problem. oh well the woes of a low budget boater.

Nice deal.....I had a '78 20' Gulfstream......

Then I moved up to this '84 24' Offshore...

Gotta love those Gradys........ :)

I rebuilt the IL6 in the '78 Gulfstream.
Being that you are putting in a new longblock and manifold and, you boat in salt water.....did you consider installing a FWC system?

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

I did consider it until I saw the price of the "whole" system. For this year, I will continue flushing the system religiously. Between the cost of the long block, new manifold, tune up, etc., etc., etc,... The $800 for the closed system is just too much.

I got a 12% raise this year and my bonus was increased, so I'll be able to afford more stuff later in the year, but not yet! I wish I could though.

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

It will most likely be too late to convert to a closed system even after 1 year of salt water use.....Nice looking boat!,,,,,JK

To Bad the Archives are Gone..........

FreebeTony,......errrr,...BabylonBoater did a Real Cool Self-Engineered closed cooling system on His old I6 motor..........

I'm pretty certain that he spent Way Under the $800.00 you've seen.........

For you Saltwater Boaters,...... I see it as Time/ Money Well Spent........... ;) Money In The Bank, so to speak........

Thanks for the compliment Bondo!

Yes, I did install a custom FWC'd system on my IL6.

Cost me much less than $800 because I got the heat excahnger for free!!

But even if you found something on ebay, it would cost alot less than $800.

Atleast install 1/2 system and procect the block........... :)

Re: Rust Removal from Manifold

Looking at my "compartment", it doesn't have a lot of room in there. I'm assuming yours was installed parallel to the block on starbord side???
