Screw Paint!

I used self etching primer etc and the primer and paint came right off - not sure what I did wrong - but I am doing what I wanted to do all along - bare aluminum - OLD SCHOOL - it looks awesome! Pictures don't do it Justice

Yep a lot of the aluminum boat builders are going bare and using Vinyl graphics to add flare. Nice job by the way.. I'll be building a Glen-L aluminum Jet Sled this winter and it will not get any paint.

EXACTLY BROTHER!

Plus now I can name her what I wanted to all along "Bare Naked Lady"

Seriously - pictures do not do it justice...I still need to hit it again with some steel wool - it looks super cool - and if NB ever gets those emblems to me it'll look even better!

Mrs. Starcrafter was doing everything she could to stay out of the pic...I was trying to get her to re-enact the scene from "Cool Hand Luke" - but no dice....

LOL, "what we have here is a lack of communication" ;)

I'm a little late to this thread, I used rusto myself but have not put it to the test yet. One thing to remember I think, is the variables, as in... are you painting in the hot sun, on hot aluminum, what prep was done overall before the primer was used, what brush, roller or sprayed techniques were used, time allowed between coats{we all know how much we want it done and on the water ;)} were the manufacturers directions followed, using different brands of paint & primer etc etc the list goes on......just rambling here sorry.

Re: Rustoleum paint job sucks!!! Bad advice?

Is there a "consensus" from those who have used Rustoleum marine as to whether a painted glass hull in good condition needs primer or not? I have seen opinions both ways in my research. The Rustoleum page is no help. My Thunderbird has been sanded down with an orbital using 120 to thoroughly scuff the (painted) hull, but not down into the glass. Should I prime it or not?

Thanks!

You said "painted" glass hull, is that what you meant?

I ask that because if you are going over paint there's no way to say if you need primer or not, or if the two paints are compatible unless you know what it is.

If you meant over gel coat its different, gel coat is a very good substrate for paint to bond to and typically doesn't need a primer. Primer comes into play when you need to fill any imperfections in the surface or cover areas that have been filled.

Never remove the gel coat and expose the glass when painting unless its absolutely necessary.

Rustoleum marine is an alkyd oil-based enamel, so it really should not matter whether the previous paint layer was oil-based alkyd, water-based acrylic, sprayed lacquer or enamel, or what have you...just so long as it's not some kind of ablative paint.

Your 120-grit scuff sand should work on either previous paint or gelcoat to get the Rustoleum marine to adhere.

Sorry - to be more clear, it's the original paintfrom 1968 on the hull, very tough whatever it is. I have now thoroughly scuffed it, but not to the surface of the glass.

Thanks. I primed the gelcoat because it was just plain old and weatherbeaten. I sanded it before priming. The hull, however, is physically in better shape because the original paint really held up.

Originally it was orange, I'm going to red, so hopefully 3 or 4 coats will do it.
