Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Thanks Guys!!

ohm116 - The impeller has been ordered. The plate was very easy to remove once I had some slack in the line, but I didn't think about greasing the cable. I'll be sure to grease it prior to reassembly.

freddyray21 - If your "extra" motor has good valves and your still willing to part with it, please PM me and I wouldn't mind taking it off your hands.:D

I think I'm going to try to reuse the float utilizing your suggestions. I spent some quality time at work today,, searching for parts online. I've sent a few emails and made a few phone calls and I'll keep my fingers crossed. I did find some replacement decals. They're not the right colors, but maybe they can make some adjustments if the price is right. Here's a link to the picture:

http://www.americanoutboard.com/decals/royal/royal.htm

Thanks again for all the help so far! I'm sure I'm going to need plenty more along the way.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

It sure appears the motor may have taken a swim you may have take it apart and evaluate the interior.
There is a rear cylinder cover DON'T REMOVE IT.
Gale built a lot of private label motors besides yours based on that motor.
used parts are out there.
If you go to the library look at Peter Hunns The Old Outboard Book.
Also aftermarket service manuals are out there at ebay I have 3 that cover all brands below 30 hp.55-72 this also may be at the library.
I think I read somewhere that iboats has factory reprints right here.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

freddyray21 - WOW!! Thanks for taking the time to scan all of that in!:D I hope you don't mind, but I printed a copy out to keep in the shop.

I was just checking the 'new posts' section and ran across one by FD203 that includes the link below. It has a bunch of different service manuals for virtually any engine. It doesn't have the '51-'53 Gale 5hp manual, but it does have 1954 and on. Most of the parts look to be the same, so I'm going to use it for now as ebay doesn't have any listed for my motor currently.

http://web.ebscohost.com/serrc/sear...402-e447-48a7-a237-f762476d5c95@sessionmgr103

As for the...carburetor I have a few different parts dealers searching for one, but if they can't find a good one you may be hearing from me. $:D$

steelespike - I was thinking the same thing, but the crank turns very smoothly and nothing else appears to be seized as far as I can tell. Now that I have a service manual I'm going to try to get to the cylinders to see if the walls are scored.

I hold Peter Hunn at least partially responsible for this outboard repair disease I seem to have caught. Another contributor is Max Wawrzyniak III and his book Cheap Outboards! HA!:)

Thanks - BOB

Max is a friend of mine and a great guy. I am lucky as I get to call him and pick his brain if I need to.

WOW! Now that's a great resource to have available! I actually picked up two old OMCs from the '50s (5.5hp, 10hp) this weekend to tinker with based on his book. In the book Max advises against Gales due to lack of parts, but hey...it was free!!! I have to admit that it has become somewhat of an obsession though.:D

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

acmeoutboards.com has an owners manual on CD for 5 hp Sea Kings (Gale) made from 1951-1954. Those are stout little motors...easy to keep and nice runners.

nothing wrong with a Gale if you stick to the "newer" ones. Most of the newer ones share parts with J/E present case excepted.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Hey! This is the same as my 54 SeaKing 5HP. I just replaced all the ignition parts and rebuilt the carb good as new. I wish I had this scans 2 weeks ago! :)

I have pulled the lower unit, but didn't replace the impeller yet, thanks for the pictures. Did you find the exact impeller? Or do you have to modify the thickness to get it to fit? I thought I read that this one is no longer available and that there is another similar but a little thicker so you have to modify it.

By the way, how do you adjust this odd carb? What are the initial settings? It is quite different from anything in the 'Joe Reeves Carb adjust' thread.

Thanks,

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Hi asdasc - ohm found a new replacement impeller here:

http://www.vintageoutboard.com/

It's part number 375688. If it helps I found out the motor takes Champion J6C Spark plugs.

I think you got lucky with your carb, parts of mine are toast and I'm not having much luck finding replacement parts. I might start looking for a parts motor if all else fails.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

there is not real difference on the carb settings on those from the Joe Reeves method. The high speed in mounted on the front and the low speed is on the port side of the carb. High speed initial setting I use is a half turn out. Low speed I start with about one turn out then adjust both from there.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Today I brought out the puller and took the flywheel off. Here are a couple of pictures of the magneto:

The coils weren't cracked but the coil heels were a little corroded. The condensers are rusty and the points are pretty cruddy as well.

I'm going to replace the coils, condensers & points as well as the spark plug wires & boots. I was hoping one of you guys could double check the parts I found to make sure they're the right ones. I will be ordering the parts from:

http://www.vintageoutboard.com/

The parts I need checked:

Coil - original part#580-118
- new #18-5181 (at above link)

Condenser/Points - original #510-173
- new #18-5006 (at above link)

I know it's a pain in the @#&%, I just want to be sure I order the right parts. Thanks in advance.:)

Those are the correct part number, you can also order them through Napa auto parts and Carquest auto parts, they are a couple dollars more but no shipping as they are usually stocked in the warehouses. Also Iboats well have them. Those coils look quite good actually but it is probably much better to replace them instead of wondering how long the old ones well last.

Hi ohm116,

Thanks for the confirmation! I checked here (iboats) first of course!:D While they do have the coils, unfortunately they don't carry the condensers/points kit.

I thought the coils looked good too, but as long as I'm under there I'm going to replace everything. Then it should be good for another 55 years...right?

Yeah just keep the old bits that are good for spares, certainly doesn't hurt.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Well I was looking around online last week and lookee lookee what I found:

HPIM0755.jpg

HPIM0756.jpg

HPIM0757.jpg

The original is on the right in all 3 pictures. I haven't looked at the condition of the float in the "new" one yet, but the reeds are good as new and the carb body is fairly clean so I think between the two of them I should be able to put a pretty sweet carburetor together!:)

I also retrieved a spare propeller from the same guy. My impeller, coils, condensers & points and spark plug wires should be here this week, so I'm hoping to fire this baby up by next weekend!!:D

Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the flywheel bolt? The Evinrude 5.5s of this era were 40-45 ft. lbs., will this work for mine too?

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Yep, 40 - 45 ft/lbs, just checked the book :D Good to see you found a carb, its a very simple little unit, you should easily be able to get one assembled. You might want to look into redoping the float, I need to do it on mine still.

Re: Saved From the Garbage Man

Nice job on getting the carb! I wish I could post the pictures of mine all cleaned up. I will post them when I get back home to access them. Mine should be in the water by now, but I keep forgetting the feeler gauge when coming out to the cottage where the motor is. I still have to set the points.

I also found that the bolt on the lower right of the carb is stripped. I am thinking about drilling it out and re-tapping it.

What are you thoughts on that vs using a helicoil?
