Re: Saving money on foam: bottles and other bad ideas.

J/K Michigan is a Great State
I was curious here and crunched the numbers to determine that the $3958.33 thousand quoted above would purchase the 60,000 balls used to float the boat on Myth Busters.

Also, if anyone is curious, 60,000 pig-pong balls have a displacement of a little over 61 cubic feet. Sixty one cubic feet of 2 pound foam would cost around $450...which is a whole lot cheaper than $3958.33 and includes shipping.

I did not see the episode on TV, but from the slide show on the Internet, I wonder where they were able to put 61 cubic feet of balls in that boat...it didn't look that big. Also the balls have spaces between them, so they actually take up quite a bit more than 61 cubic feet (but they still only displace 61 cubic feet of water since the water fills the spaces). Anyway, I think I will do a search and try and find out when that episode is coming back on.

Another $0.02 worth,
JoeOriginally posted by swimmin' for shore:
I did an ebay search. You can buy 288 pingpong balls for 19.00, as the market is flooded with them. At that price, it would cost you 3958.33, plus shipping.
