What is your opinion on Craftsman screwdrivers (especially phillips)? I cant give my opinion because bad language isn't allowed here. I don't have any complaints with their other tools, just their screwdrivers.

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

I have always had good luck with them. Had 1 or 2 that was faulty and took them back and got new ones.
1 the driver part was loose in the handle and the other one the point rounded off.

IMO phillips screwdrivers no matter the brand will wear out. I've used Snap On, Craftsman, SK, Kobalt, Klien, Stanley, and other off the wall ones. If you use them a lot, they do wear out. Klien seems to have held up better than some in my trade of work.

The very best screwdrive is OJ and vodka :D

I've messed up the ends on a couple. Can't seem to remember to take them back for replacement.

i have found that the insert tips, sold for drywall screws hold up better than anything else. and come in 1,2,3 size.

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

Shouldn't a phillips screwdriver last for more than 10-15 screws?

I might just have one of those in a few minutes after I have a Bloody Mary. They're good for breakfast. :D:D

from a movie: A little early to start drinking isn't it?

When you drink as much as I do, you have to start early.

I thought it was funny anyway.

Too bad you American's don't have Robertson head screws. Was going to recommend replacing your Phillips head screws with Robertson, they're the best. Not sure you can get them down there though.

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

Klein is the best I've used, bar none. I keep a 10 in 1 with me at all times. Clear yellow handle with black rubber. ROUND grip, not the awkward square grip that wears you out when using it one handed.

I think slotted screws are the work of the devil. Phillips would be my choice. Torx and other special types are nice but they tend to have less tolerance to being boogered up.

The best way to make a phillips screwdriver (and screw) last is to always match the size driver to the screw.

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

Are you using Phillips screwdrivers on Reed and Prince screws? That'll ruin any of them.

R&P screws have a flat at the bottom, like most drywall screws. Phillips have a point and won't seat fully.

Grind the tips flat, then they will work for both.

My favorite set of screwdrivers are made by Irwin.I have had them for 40 years or so and not one of them shows any sign of wear except for one shank is getting a little loose in the handle. There are about 8 screwdrivers in the set from about 20" down to 5" maybe.I have worn out a few Craftsman, slotted and phillips but my wooden handled Irwins are the best screwdrivers I have ever owned. The bits still look new.Ron G

Home depot sells screws that appear to be phillips but are best installed with a square tip....... go figure?

My favorite screwdriver is a Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver with interchangeable tips. I've had that thing and used it ALOT for over 20 years now.

I use craftsman nearly everyday, but when the job comes to tool abuse time like prying I break out the odd ball brand big screw drivers.

We do have Robertson head screws in America, and they are they are the screw of choice in my house.

Our favorite screwdrivers are the 6 in ones. The ones with the large, and small philips, and the large and small slotted, and the two nut drivers. But, then again, we don't use them for much. We have drills, and about 30 pounds of various driver bits, and we don't believe in slotted screws.

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

I probably have 50 of them laying around somewhere. They are great for everyday stuff but lose it big time on the tips, if I really have to crank on something. The "Pro" models are a little better, but not much.

In reality, when you can buy a set of them for around $15, you can't really expect miracles.

I have a few Snap-on phillips drivers, that I have beat on for over 20 years. They are the real deal, but you must pay the price, which one screw driver will cost as much as a set of Cratsman.

Got a funny feeling you are blaming the driver (both ends), and not WHAT you think is a Phillips..probably a Torx..just a thought..

Re: Screwdriver Opinion

myself I do NOT like craftsman screwdrivers, they are ground wrong on the busines end, and I have had their phillips tips made so wrong they would not fit anything! Klien is a good driver but has an insert tip, so you cant sharpen it:mad:, SK is one of the best I have owned, one (the large pry bar size) I sharpened into a chisel and drove the shank through the handle. It just swelled up and the tip has never broke. I have used it to cut 3/8" grade 8 bolts! That was 30 years ago and it is still sharpe. Me abuse tools, not me :p;):D. Fuller (I think) was a good screwdriver also, they came in a bucket of 50 or 60 screwdrivers.

You can.

We were in Ft. Wayne and one of the guys at the place we visit was pulling apart a wooden storage unit and this phrase came up.

"Damn. It's the *(*(&&) square screws. Get me the square driver, Phil. Stupid morons never heard of a Phillips?"

I had to laugh and try to tell him Robertsons are great but.... I remembered... I'm Canadian and I shouldn't spread my joy around.

As for my opinion. I like Craftsman and I like Mastercraft. (Only available in Canada?) I keep a toolbox in the basement and one in the shed for truck/boat applications. Mastercraft inside and Craftsman outside. Never had one break but did break a Craftsman wrench and they replaced it for free. So no complaints there...
