Wife and I went boating today. Got to the lake, backed the boat into the water. Went to park the track, came back and the boat was going under!
FORGOT the drain plug. Ran back got the track,(two guy's there getting their boat out) help. Got it on to the trailer and up on land water came pouring out. Boy did I feel like a fool. It a aluminum boat so hope there's no problems. Have it tilled way up so the water drains to the back and a fan on it.

Golly, I've never done that...NOT! Fresh Super Big Gulp, makes for a nice manual bailer. Of course then you have nothing to drink...

EVERYBODY has left their garboard drain plug out when launching...but they usually only do it once...:D

Welcome to the club, but i understand it is a very secretive membership. . .

Now that you have that out of the way, get in back in the water and go have fun !

I/o or outboard. If its an I/O and water came up to the starter or block you may have problems. I did the same thing and the starter was fine at first, but rusted through in about 3 days and was junk.

Last week,I almost forgot the plug. Hate to admit it,but this would have been the 4TH time. I'm a moron! I usually put it in when I hook up to the truck,[less to remember at the ramp]but I got out of my usual routine..again... dang it.

Re: Screwed up big!!

Last time I did it the ramp was to steep and I couldn't pull the boat out of the water. I had to wade into neck deep water to put the plug in and then sit and wait for the bilge to pump out enough water to pull the boat out. Boy the looks I got while I sat there blocking one lane of a two lane ramp on a weekend morning. I know put the plug in when I park the boat in the garage at the end of a day. You cant forget to put it in if it's already there!

Luckily, I only need to put the plug in once a year, but I live in terror of forgetting it.

I launched this past Tuesday. The plug went in at 6:23 AM. Yep, I mentally noted the time to reinforce for myself the fact that I had put it in. :)

I havent done it in years, but about 2 months ago, I had new people with me and I forgot it. I dove in the water in what felt like 30 degree weather and put the plug in. I wasnt gonna risk the amount of time it would take to go get the truck. Bilge pump needed to be tested anyway. It worked.

You will be fine after it drains and I bet it will be cleaner inside too. We have all experienced a case of cranial flatulence! :D

Re: Screwed up big!!

just bought a new Gar board bilge plug for my boat...here at iboats...it has a wee ping pong like ball , that will be forced into a seat if I forget ...lol here is the link

http://www.iboats.com/Seasense-One-...9742929--**********.227276527--view_id.237498

I keep my boat covered ...so no debris is on board at any time...

I also have the anti-dumbass garboard drain on my boat. Havent forgotten the plug (yet) but at least there is a second line of defense if I do...

Re: Screwed up big!!

There are two kinds of boaters; those who have left the plug out once, and those who have forgotten it more than once.

Re: Screwed up big!!

I haven't done it yet but learned at an early age what happens at the dock when you don't.
I was about 10 when a guy unloaded a rather pricey cabin boat ahead of us, he forgot the plug, didn't realize it till he got away from the dock, I was the one that jumped in and plugged the hole in neck deep cedar water and plugged the hole while someone hunted for a plug onboard their boat. All the fumbling around and no one coming up with the plug while I sat there with a hand over the hole trying to slow the leak is a memory that doesn't go away.

It comes right back to me every time I hitch up a boat. The plug goes in right then, I don't wait to get to the ramp. If it's raining, oh well, the bilge pump will handle that when we get there. Also, always carry a spare plug or two, a few in the boat, one in each tackle box etc.
I've got a coffee can full of spare plugs in the garage, when I get a boat ready to go in the water for the first time, a handful of them get tossed in various locations just in case.

Knock on wood, in 30+ years of boating, I've yet to forget to put the plug in.

I've got a buddy that has a check list printed and in hand each time he launches, plus a note on the back bumper that reminds him to put the plug in and tie down the boat.
Another pulls the plug and stores it pinned to the trailer receiver, so when he puts in the receiver to tow the boat, he's got the plug already in hand. He slips the ring of the plug right over the receiver pin when he parks the boat and pulls the receiver out.
