SCHRECK, If it were me i would at least put the same amount of foam back in that was it. That's just me though. Hey you didn't happened to buy that boat from a man that was about 80 years old did ya???????

Jim you know what he just happens to be 84, just sold the house and needed it out. They say it ran three years ago but all indications are about 1983 for sure but maybe later but not for very long. just about done cleaning up then i will post more pictures. Peter:)

Cool
It sits on a custom built trailer trailer with keel rollers, full length and bunks for stability, it is so well balanced it only exerts about 100 lbs of tongue weight and total weight is around 3900 lbs i pull it with a dodge caravan with trailer package. I tows much better than my 22 ft sea hag on a not so custom trailer, that one has an enormous tongue weight. i sold that trailer when i got this one though. it is a great combination.

Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

Peter, I'm no expert on coast guard rules but what I've gleaned on this site is that the foam is only REQUIRED on boats under 21 feet. The decision is yours. I will add that the white bead board will suck up moisture and the blue/pink extruded does not.

Another thing I'd also add is the only thing I wished I could redo on my boat is the addition of a belly fuel tank. You really need some additional fuel capacity in these boats.

Hope this helps!

Your right NB and there are the possibilities for a center tank, a friend had an 80 gallon tank built for the center, im strongly considering it, it would sure increase range, 116 gallons oh how nice, ill have to check, if I have the space available, a 40 would be ok too i guess.

so the pics of the white and green boat that we are looking at .... thats the chieftan ?? i found one for sale but it was a 22 footer but did not have the same interior with the cabinets and such. was that set up on the 24 footer only maybe ?

and you pull that with a caravan ?? holy crap, i wouldnt have guessed that.

Schrek, congrats on the Chieftain. She is a nice big water boat and looks real comfortable. We fish the Michigan side of Huron around Alpena on a 24' fiberglass Seaswirl and it works out pretty well. I'm sure you'll like stepping up in size a bit for the wider beam and stability.

I've always wanted to explore and fish the Ontario side, looks like a boaters paradise if you ask me.:D

Yes my caravan has it follow just nice hardly know it is there, and according to the tag the model is 24 CHM4 I/O , it is only an inch or so under 25 ft, foam is out and a center hull tank is going to go in. Thanks NB it is the answer i needed, and yes the fishin is good on this side but i want to try the other side when im done. Peter :)

Peter, you're welcome.

CBG, from what I can tell, the 24 and 26 footers really add some space for extra stuff. They are not only longer, they're deeper too. The 18'starcheifs only have the beds, the 22' Chieftons came with fridges, sinks and room for a portapotty. I guess when you step up to 24 & 26 you can add a little more.

Let me know what kind of fish you'd like to get on the Michigan side and I can give you some waypoints to plug in the old GPS and give you a pretty good headstart:D There are some shipwrecks and near islands(100ft+ bottom depth that shoots right up to 4') that offer some good walleye and salmon opportunities.

Will you be putting some downriggers and planer boards on her to rig for fishing the big lake?

As far as the fuel tank, if you throw a 116 gallon tank you would be increasing the weight considerably. According to my math it would be about 950 additional pounds with a full tank.

If the Caravan would be ok with that amount then I'd say go for it...my dad's 24' has a 150 gallon tank and the peace of mind is priceless when running miles out on Lake Huron.

I believe that the Starcraft Club had seen a 26' Islander on evilbay recently but I didn't see it personally. Islanders have been my favorite boat since I was ten years old, so add me to the list of people who desire a Cheiftain or Islander:D

HA I will for sure put my downriggers on her i have 4 big johns, salmon laketrout, and pickeral are my catches. The 116 fuel will be the total capacity in the three tanks. Also a pair of smart tabs i think will be in order. So much to do and all it is doing is raining. tomorrow its supposed to be nice so im going FISHING in Sea Hag, my 22 ft islander, might as well use it it is in the water all the time. Peter:)

Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

Shreck very nice boat. I agree with NB put some flotation in the bottom , better safe than sorry. 40-60 gallon center tank would be nice, over that I think would be a lot of extra weight to haul around for that Mercruiser and that Caravan. I hope it has a 3.8 V6.
Going to be tough at the launch ramp though....

What does that boat have for a engine ?

The bigger the boat the more stuff you can put in it and the heavier it gets.

I use to have a 30 foot cruiser that I trailer-ed and it weighted in at 12500 and by 3 years latter I put it on a scale and was at 14800 minus trailer weight. 2300 lbs of stuff.......because it fit !

I hope you are not trailering far with that Caravan pulling this boat the wind drag alone will be something.

Whether you want to call them walleye or pickeral is fine with me I know a few good spots to catch either one;) Got these last week on vacation.

As far as salmon...the fishery is markedly down from 10-15 years ago. My dad has a 33lb mounted on his wall from the "good ole days" but we still get them in the 10-18lbs range quite a bit.

Lake Trout are always in abundance if you troll with the downrigger balls nearly bouncing off the bottom you can always rustle up a few.

If you bear west from southern Manitoulin Island/northern Bruce Peninsula you will hit our beach near middle island, so let me know when you are going to be over that way:)

I've always wondered what kind of Canadian folks lived over on the other side of Huron...when I was a little kid I wanted to send a message in a bottle over that way:rolleyes:...nice to meet one finally.
