Re: Sea Ray Transom, Stringers and Storage

need to see more pics of prgress, thanks in advance you have shown me alot I didnt think of, but a quick question what is tabbing ????
this is from an earlier reply

"Okay, so I have gotten quite a way further than the last time that I posted. Got the tank back in and all hooked up, foam poured in both sides and the deck back on the top of the stringers, using the PL Adhesive and some stainless screws. So yeah, I am rockin it out!!!! Anyways, I have a question about tabbing the deck to the hull and to the stingers. I have 17oz cloth and epoxy resin, would I be okay with one layer of tabs from the deck to the hull, and deck to the stringers? "

and
i forgot his name
"when you say tab, are you doing short tabs or taping the whole seam? You really need to tape the whole thing, the deck is a major part of the boat's structure"

Hi,

Speaking as a hobby wooden boat builder... The absolute best advice I can give is that you seek out your "moaning chair" and moan. (The "moaning chair" is legend in wooden boat building circles. It's the chair that you flop into and shed your frustration without doing harm to yourself or the boat.) Once sanity returns and you're breathing normally again, we can get more pictures and we'll all figure this thing out. If you have to, you can hand draw what you perceive the problem is, and then take a photo of the drawing and post that pic. (I've done that several times and it works pretty well actually.)

Have I ever used a moaning chair? I once built two port sides of the same boat. Yeah I know the moaning chair.

BUT>>>>>> if i was to have a moaning chair......it would be a 5 gallon can of resin !......sat on one of those things and thought about how to fix somthing till the resin stuck my butt to the can !

pigrge.......

As for the mount...

I'd just fit in a new piece of wood and glass it like the original. Be sure to use epoxy PB to glue/bed it down completely including the edge joint to the old mount.

Re: Sea Ray Transom, Stringers and Storage

Okay fellas, so I have actually gotten pretty far on this thing, it is ROCKIN! It is cold as hell so she was under a tarp for a while! But I finally got that taken care of, see pics. I have th deck on, I was Peanut buttering the seams, and beginning to glass the deck until it got too damned cold, I figured out the motor mount problem, and got it all taken care of, just put a piece of wood behind the mount already glassed in, and glassed the holy hell out of it to the old one. Got the motor all in, and guess what, IT STARTED!!! Then some loud popping noise happened and I shut the motor off and put it to bed! I think I may have blown the engine coupler, who knows, that will be determined when it get warm out though! Anyways, she is close.....REAL CLOSE!! Just got the new side interior panels, motor cover, dash pieces, and rear seats done. Got new captains chairs for the front seats!!! I am soooo excited! These are the pics I have!

Re: Sea Ray Transom, Stringers and Storage

Way to stick with it!

A popping noise, could be anything... blockage in the exhaust, a hose somewhere, a gasket. The coupler would be the most annoying to replace.

But you've sure found out most of what could go wrong... you'll have a boat with parts you know are good, and be confident enough to fix anything that goes wrong :)

My first boat was the same way... only I gave up on that one and got the second and third boats.

man, i got to hand it to ya on your project. I just read the whole thread and I'm impressed with how you worked through it all and got it to where it is. I just found a bunch of bad areas on my boat and am considering going through this myself. I must be crazy, huh? Good Work!!

You know what man, I had NO IDEA what I was getting into, nor the cost. But the thing that I MUST keep telling myself is that it will be ALL MINE when I am done! And I will know this thing inside and out! There are soooo many guys on the water who have a ridiculous payment on their rigs, and know nothing about them when they get stranded in the middle of the lake. Man, I should never get stranded! HOPEFULLY! My little '82 closed bow is gonna ROCK the lake baby!

Re: Sea Ray Transom, Stringers and Storage

Well, its been quite a while since I posted anything on here, just wanted to throw in an update. FINALLY got everything almost done, just a little tinkering here and there. Since I last posted, I have a full interior, outdrive is on, with new Stiletto Stainless prop, I did have one more big project. Removing that pesky bottom paint. It was an absolute bear, but I was able to do it. I removed a mojority of it with paint stripper and a pressure washer, that revealed the hack job that some tool bag did. They had to have sanded that thing with pebbles. It was sooooo scratched up. I had to remove the scratches with 320 grit sandpaper, then begin the tedious process of wet sanding at 400, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, and 2000, then compound buffing, polishing and waxing. What a PITA! But the results were much better than expected. Finally got a new trailer for her, and she is almost ready to set sail! Cannot WAIT!! Pic to follow!

Did you repaint the bottom or just sand off the brown paint & polish? You going to be heading up to Alum Creek anytime soon? I am hoping to get the first trip in this week.

Re: Sea Ray Transom, Stringers and Storage

Hey ShawnR sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread. I actually traded that boat for a jetski. I had issues with the outdrive. Which was the last straw. But to answer your questions, yes I did just sand off the old and polish the remaining gel. What a tedious job!!! My lake of preference turned out to be Deer Creek in Mt Sterling. What a nice lake. I have taken my new boat, '98 Bayline 1950 and the ski to alum a few times. The ski is an absolute BLAST on Alum, a little choppy for the boat tho, as I like to wakeboard and ski. Cheers brother!
