Re: SeaKing

Hey mfbear. On Compression. Do not downgrade compression as an element in firing the plug. Having spent 40+ years dealing with high voltage and associate goodies, I know first hand that "altitude" hence atmospheric pressure has an impact on voltage jumping a gap.

But, with respect to this conversation, the problem is no spark at 1 atmosphere...that's your easiest atmosphere to jump a gap. The higher the pressure, the harder it is to fire...to a point; and heading towards a vacuum it is just the opposite....till you get to the vacuum then it is just the opposite. Weird but that's how it works.

Mark

Re: SeaKing

Well the spark plug is set correctly. I removed the flywheel once again and cleaned it once again by lightly sanding the complete interior. I held a screw driver next to the flywheel magnets and they seems to have a strong pull. I reassembled and checked again. I spun the motor by impact wrench with the plug out (of course) and still NO spark. I will do a compression check and provide feedback.

Ron

Check to be sure the base side of the points are well grounded Be sure the stator plate is grounded.Disconnect the condenser from the points and check that the points are making good contact when closed. If the point cam is removeable be sure it is on right side up.Be sure the moveable point is note shorted to ground.Be sure the stator plate doesn't wobble Check the airgap between the magnets and the coil armature. The plug wire should be a solid core (wire core).

Re: SeaKing

Ron,

This is not rocket science. You will prevail. Go and get an ohmmeter and do as I suggested. Let us know what you read in terms of resistance from the magneto low voltage wire (terminal....the terminal physically crimped to the wire, not the nut or screw that it it attached to) to the case of the sparkplug.

Tell us what the resistance reading is with the leads shorted together, then the reading when you make the measurement.

Then look and see if there is another terminal on the coil.....like mfbear is eluding to, that can be remotely shorted out killing the coil's ability to generate voltage.....same way a lawnmower kills the engine.

Reread the posts and do it. You will make it.

Mark

Ok....will do. I'm in Oklahoma and it snowed today. Too cold in my shop to play.

Re: SeaKing

Ok.......I ohm everything out and got .8 everywhere. Then, I changed the wiring coming from the coil to the points back and forth and still the same results. No spark. I get the same results with 3 different coils and 3 different plugs as well as 2 different sets of points. I'm nearly bald.

Ron

Have not heard about how compression test came out. Still just a thought.

How far are you from Frognot, Texas? Bring that sucker down here and I'll fix it for you for nuttin (labor).......or die trying.

Your ohm readings are execllent. Wouldn't by chance have gotten a bad coil from the parts house?

Mark

Re: SeaKing

One more question. Do you "not have spark" when the high voltage connector is loose, not connected to the plug?

Mark

Re: SeaKing

The parts house sent me 2 like coils plus my old one. I get the same results on all 3.

I try it again without the plug.

Ron

Re: SeaKing

The reason for disconnecting was the remote chance that the plug was internally shorting.

Mark

Re: SeaKing

I tried that and still no spark. I've tried 3 different plugs. I've gone over and over the whole system. It's pretty simple. I've swapped wires around, put them back, and everything. There is no apparent grounding out of anything. By the way, the compression is very good. I've got a backhoe. I think I'll bury the damn thing as deep as I can.

Ron

Ron,

I am really mortified by this problem. There is absolutely something here that we are all overlooking.

Got a camera? Take some pics and maybe we can see something.

Mark

Re: SeaKing

I had a friend drop by yesterday. He races stock cars and is a pretty good mechanic. He also owns a parts store. We went through that damn thing together. We did have a VERY small tiny spark at the end of the plug wire. But nothing significant.

Ron

Re: SeaKing

I assume the hv lead is part of the coil so that we don't have to worry about bad hv wiring.

You measured resistance from the coil low voltage terminal to the case of the plug at 0.8 ohms with the points closed.

What we didn't do was measure it with the points open. You should read infinity (open circuit). If not something is shunting the points and the coil can't charge properly; hence a weak spark.

Mark

Well I'm about ready to give up on this. I've never had anything to give me this much trouble.

Don't give up now. Look at all the mileage you have on this thing. Sooner or later you will prevail.

Besides, you are probably running the longest beer tab, er ah post and replies in the history of iboats. Grin.

So, what's the reading?

Mark
