Re: Sears 7.5 HP Crank seal?

Found a shortblock for that sucker! Installed it with new pump impeller, driveshaft seal, new gear oil in the lower, and went to the trash can. Lit it up. and ran it for a couple of minutes with a pretty fat oil ratio, (breakin' in a new top end don'tcha know), and it's not moving water. I'm sure I've hacked the water tube install, so I'll be going back in down there. is there a secret to getting that thing plugged in?

depends on which end your working from and how the water tube connects to the cooling plate, if the tube uses a nut and washer to attach I install the tube down the leg using a small flash light, once in the pump I align with the plate and secure then mount the engine,

Second method w/o nut on cooling plate, I stand the engine on its head shine light down the leg install water tube in cooling plate, then drop the foot w/drive shaft down the leg expecting contact with the crank shaft, once in the crank I lower foot to about a pinky finger from leg to foot and then manipulate the water tube into the pump with the pinky or a stiff wire.

Thank you, once again, Mr. C. No nuts on this one, (seems like something I've heard before...). I don't seem able to see the hole down there when it's upside down. Now I've had it in the trash can, and I would have to hang myself in the shop if I get water in that top end turning the thing upside down. Maybe I'll drop the lower with it right side up.

deferent adapter plates require adaptive techniques.
Hey your inbox is full, I bought that last motor and wanted to ask you about the keyways on yours...how many are cut...is it one for the points cam> and one for the flywheel? I'm thinking about having the crank converted to a SSI

I don't know how to clear the stinkin' inbox. The points crank has one keyway running down the tapered flywheel seat, and thru the next cylindrical section of crank, where it goes thru the little points housing. The drop in cam that opens the points has a key made into the bore. It has a top, and a bottom, it's marked. The flywheel key stacks on top in the same keyway. The SSI crank only has a Woodruff key, (one of those half round jobbers), in the tapered flywheel seat, and it's not in the same angular position relative to TDC as the points key, so, effectively, if you put the wrong crank into one of these engines, it has no key. I would get a points stator to run that new shortblock. I saw one on ebay this morning, maybe 15 Dinars. The coils are twenty buck, and very gettable, Then, one of these little jewels;

Ground the white wire, hook the blue wire to the coil primary, and you are snappin' up the fish with the grandpeople!

I dropped the lower on mine, put the drill to the drive shaft, submerged it, spun it, no pumpage. The drive pin was lying in the bottom of the impeller cavity. Sweeeet. Then, the whole driveshaft pulled right out of the lower unit, and, of course, will not go back in. Looks like a really small snap ring groove at the end of the shaft is missing. Bet those gears will love it when that thang introduces itself to 'em.

Yes, it is. I'm sure I could get one at the hardware store, 'cause it's standard, but I'd have to open the lower to get the dead one and line up the parts, so I swapped the new impeller to my trusty SSI motor backup lower, put the 90 weight to it, made a new gasket, buttoned it up and tested it - We have pumpage. I installed it, using bailing wire with an open loop to steer the tube into the pump. Lit it off in the trash can, second yank. Sounds great. Now if the seals in that lower will just turn out to be OK, I'll be doing some half throttle cruise time to break it in next weekend. WOOHOOOOOOooooooooo!!!!!
