I am wondering if anyone reading this thread may be able/willing to offer some help please? I have a 1986 Sears Gamefisher 7.5 Hp motor (made by ESKA), model # 217-586753. I bought a month ago and having hassles with the carb, I think. I cleaned out the carb, replaced clamps on the pipes, checked the needle and jet, and generally made sure the inlets and outlets on the carb were in working condition, and that fuel was getting in and out of the carb. Once done, and replacing the spark plug, she ran well... for 2 boat trips. Tried to start her the other day, and no luck. Tried spraying carb start into the carb, but would still not start. I even took out the spark plug and sprayed in the chamber as well. Still wouldn't start. Fuel is definately getting into the carb, because its draining out of the bottom of the column assembly (at the prop and the exhaust outlets). I think this is strange though. I am not having any luck in finding a replacement carb kit. Does anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks for reading..

Time to check the spark. Pull the plug, attach the plug wire, then ground the plug threads on the head. Pull the rope. You should have a nice bright spark at the spark plug gap. If not, you may have problems with the points, condenser or magneto coil. Fortunately, these later models do not have the troublesome solid state ignition, and parts are available from www.searspartsdirect.com.

If you're having trouble checking the spark, you can do what I do. Call your idiot brother-in-law and have him come over. Get him to stick his pinky finger in the spark plug wire cap, then pull the rope. He'll let you know if you have spark.:D

CATransplant: I read your similar reply on another post and was planning to use it to narrow down my problem. As you said, there are 3 things to look for - spark, fuel, and compression. I will let you know what I uncover.

On the part of the brother-in-law, how did you know he was stupid? LOL

Thanks for the quick response...

Oh, I just guessed. I think everyone has at least one idiot brother-in-law. ;)

The funny thing is that I've actually pulled that trick on mine....more than once. He's not quick to learn, I guess.

Man, I wish my idiot brother-in-law, who is a unix administrator and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty, i would love to test out some electrical stuff on him.

CAT has pointed you in the right direction.
You've already told us that you have a surplus of fuel running out of the leg. You've pulled it enough to know if the compression is still the same as when it was happily purring along.

Were I a betting man I'd bet that a simple degrease of the points would suffice to get it running but at the quarter century mark I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a good polish and re-gapping.

So before I was about to dismantle the carb, etc. I thought to try one more time to start her without the gas line attached. What'll know! She started first time. I connected the fuel line and immediately she died. Disconnected the line, she started again. Once again connected the line, immediately she dies. Puzzled I am???

Sounds like you hit the motor jackpot!! If your motor runs without fuel line, how is that a bad thing?

OK, not to highjack your thread, But I have good compression, and fuel too. But I only have spark on one cylinder. What could possibly be wrong with the other plug wire? Thanks

Don, When you say you disconnected the fuel line, are you referring to the one on the carb, or the quick-disconnect from a remote tank? Sliver, If you have a meter, set it to ohms. The reading between the two wires attached to your coil(primary winding) should read as a short. The reading between the plug wire connection(secondary winding) should readaround 9-10ohms. If that shows an open, your coil is bad.

asm_: that's hilarious. by the way, if you're interested in my motor that runs on air, I'll be willing to let it go for about a gazillion dollars.

Wingedwheel: I am referring to the quick disconnect from the remote tank.

Update: I have subsequently purchased a replacement carb kit. I'll let you know if that solves the problem, just as soon as I find the time to work on it. :)

sound's like a non sealing poorly set float or bad...neeeds a good viton seat installed properly and a accurate float setting or new set accurately...I use a cheap pair of id, od calipers for float sitting, if still running bad get a welch plug and do not soak but spay clean the carb and manually clean the fuel and air passages and install a new screen and flapper valve..pay attention to the placement of the flapper valve and gasket, many eska problems can be traced to poorly installed or trimmed gasket and lots of miss-information:cool: also check your carb for flat before installation, sometime people get cared away when they tightin the 3/8 carb nuts and with the new gaskets being alot thicker than stock the ears on the carb get bent...causes vacuum leaks and poor performance...
