What does the rubber plug that you push in the impeller to the back of the housing do? Is it needed?

Well,... It acts as a Bearing in the seawater pumps on 94 Nuclear Subs....

Well I guess Scott Atwater, Lauson, are out of the picture...they weren't around in 1994.....

mercruiser seawater pump 7.4 liter, crownline 250, 1994, carburetor, one piece body on pump and it is mounted on the starbord side.

Seems that everybody likes to reply with not enough info until they have it all. The quad ring,(after 4hours on the phone) is just an o-ring. never mind!
