5' pcs of chain cemented into the ground and before the cement dries press a basketball on top of it to leave a concave recess for the chain to rest in.

Hello laser..

Too bad we have to live in a world where you have to have big dogs and big guns to just have what you have and keep it without fear..

I live in a no fear world..

You want it..come and take it ( Im not gonna shoot you..or have my big dog tear your arm off :) ).

However..kids are kids..and I can recommend that you take that OB off the boat and secure it inside somewheres..

The rest of the crap is not worth 6 gunnin anyone..

Take the valubles off...and forget hammer drilling spikes/rebar or other deterants ... If they want it..they will get it..

Its like my cars. I dont lock the car ever. Come and get it..

YD.

PS. NO I will not tell you my street address ;)

I'll go ahead and lock it up. I understand you live in a place where you don't have fear. I live in the LA suburbs. They would steal Christ off the cross. I will certainly lock the OB up in the garage and all electronics will ahve to be removeable. I know kids will be kids and that's why I load my 870 w/ rubber non-lethal rounds (well, the first 2 rounds are). If someone manages to cut my heavy chains, keep my dogs quiet, and not set off my alarm then take the boat, they can have it.

Around here unfornately if you don't lock it up, it's damn near your fault it got stolen. I've had 2 motorcycles stolen, my roommates bike was stolen and most of my friends have had theirs stolen. Those thefts were ALL different occurances spanning over several years. I will be sure to lock up my valuable and you'd be surprised how well that has worked. I've never heard of ANYONE who had the chain on their bike and it was stolen. It's just too difficult even though we all know that yes it CAN be cut, it's not practical and they do move past it.

Re: Securing boat in my driveway

I use bicycle cable locks ran through each wheel to the frame of the trailer

I "used to" do the same,,, until I forgot to take the cable off one day while moving the boat/trailer to work on it. The cable snapped and was all wrapped up in the wheel. It wouldn't have stopped anyone trying to take off with the boat. I replaced it (after fixing the wheel bearing/seal) with some 5/16 chain.

To deter thieves I have 4 locks on the boat, 1- wheel locked to axle, 1- swing tongue chained back to trailer frame 2- locks through the swing tougue pin holes. If they want it bad enough they are still going to get it, but this will slow them down a bit, make it a less desirable target.

I have a coupler latch lock too, but it's really a toy. It wouldn't take but a couple minutes to hack through it with a hack saw, sawzall would take it off in 30 seconds. I use it more to keep kids from flipping the coupler latch then the trailer is attached to the truck, had them do that 1 time, was an interesting ride when it popped off on the freeway... (&@$^#* neighbor hood delinquient)

Oh yeah, if you have a bolt on coupler, either weld it on or mangle the bolts so they can't remove the coupler easily. I saw a post from So Cal where the thief simply unbolted the locked coupler, then bolted on his and drove away.

Gee, what kind of place do you live in? I live in a waterfront community in NJ. Most of my neighbors are only home on weekends, in the summer. They leave multi-hundred thousand dollar boats tied to the dock, on blocks, on trailers etc, w/o locks guns dogs etc. no one bothers them.

Then again, my Westie probably frightens any would be burglars off. He once barked at a neighbor riding her bike. I heard her say "What are you gonna do if you catch me", under her breath.

I live in South Florida where boat thefts are a daily thing and I use the Kryptonite NY Chain lock around the tire. Not just at my house, I also use it at the ramp's parking lot to make sure I don't come back to a day ruiner.

Whatever you do, don't rely on coupler locks. Down here they will use the safety chains alone to drag the boat a few blocks behind some building, and then cut the tongue and bolt another coupler on.

No way I have had this cat for 22 years, I don't think I will ever sell it, saved my butt and others to many times. I do need a new trailer though!

There are all kinds of videos on youtube showing different models of Kryptonite locks being opened with a cheap Bic ballpoint pen. Here's one but look at at the list of other related videos; I know I saw one with your model of lock.

That particular problem with lesser Kryptonite locks is about 7 years old (was first exposed in 2004) and has long since been rectified with a key/keyway redesign. The NY Lock did NOT have the same design flaw the other Krypto locks had. And any Krypto lock purchased in the last 6 years has been redesigned (provided the shop didn't pawn off what was supposed to be removed from sale stock) and the above video is no longer applicable.

Kryptonite caught hell with that.....and replaced tens of thousands of locks during that minor debacle. We in the biking crowd were well aware of what you linked, but hasn't been an issue for a looooong time.

Wheels off, boat on jackstands. Done.

Yes, this is a very effective theft deterrent. I often see boats in yards and driveways with one tire removed and the axle resting on a concrete block or something similar. Just remember to put the wheel and lugs in the garage or somewhere the thief will not find it.

The more deterrents you have, the greater the chance the boat will be left alone. Putting a hitch ball in the receiver and locking it makes it harder to steal, also a length of heavy chain through the other rim and around the frame is a good visual deterrent.

Keeping the boat completely covered with a tarp makes it harder for the thief to determine what you have and if its even worth steeling.

I agree. If boaters already are taking the weight off their trailer tires to prevent soft spots, which they should be doing, this is not much more work for a basic level of theft protection.

No I run out of traction but the floatation is better then anything else under $100,000, you have to get into the ski area type groomers to get close to the same PSI I get. Side hills great and 50 year old technology is simple to fix, parts are very easy to get still too!

I understand that BIC has upgraded their pen so it works with the new lock design. :D

Sounds like you are pretty much covered...people suck and will steal anything...2 chains, the hitch locked and the tire clamped.....gotta be a hard core to take that. If you have traffic regularly, even better. Round these parts of Florida, you just advertise..a boat aint worth dying for.....enough said..

I park my boat outside and I use a lock that goes into the hitch of the trailer and a cable through the axle and wheel. You also could use large gauge change to tie all the vehicles together.
