I have a stupid question. I know the answer but...
I've always wondered about modifying my '69 SeaRay SRV190 so as to be self bailing. I assume the engine well pretty much nixes this idea being below the waterline (?).

Ayuh,...

A dam could be built around the motor well,..
The question is,..
Is the cockpit sole Above the waterline outside the hull, at the transom,..??

The floor is.
I thought of the dam idea...hadn't given it much thought though.
It wouldn't help access to the engine.
Doubtful I'm actually gonna do this...I was just wondering.

to me. yer boat shouldn't need to be self bailing as it shouldn't leak....
anyways. i assume yer boat is a regular speedboat. i've never thought about applying this idea to a boat. but for jetskis, w/o self bailing capabilities. the make a plug that is self bailing underway.... just a thought...a example... http://www.atlanticjetsports.com/bilge_flappers___drain_plugs.htm
no idea if they work....

I agree with the fact that an I/O boat shouldn't need the self bailing deck. The situation I could picture is that the below deck area becomes laden with rain water, then the self bailing deck holes leak and sink the boat.

Those self bailing drainplugs are meant for jet skis and the like. I'm not sure I'd trust a ball and surrounding water pressure to keep me from sinking. I could picture that ball getting fouled with grass or other debris and leaking. It wouldn't take much to prevent a good seal. I'd have to have several huge back up bilge pumps and few good spare batteries before I'd even walk away from the boat with such a set up. I'd rather just rely on the good bilge pumps and batteries alone and fore go the headache of such a drain plug.
