I have a 1988 Mercury Classic Fifty 45HP engine. I have been unable to locate the serial number. Is it located in multiple places? If so, where?

Should be one of two places. There is (was?) a tag on the motor's swivel bracket with the serial on it. These tags can be faded out, washed off, or otherwise removed over the last 30-odd years.

The second place would be stamped on the motor block itself. I am pretty sure the 45/50 got it somewhere on the upper portion, near the flywheel. May be hidden by cowlings, brackets, etc.

The tab on the swivel bracket is long gone. I took a close look around and below the flywheel and couldn't see any sign of a stamped serial number on the block. Would it be on the carb side of the block or around the cylinder head?

No guarantee on this, but it may be stamped where the red highlight is below.

The only number I found are on the head and that is 1017-8359. Nothing aft of the flywheel on the top of the block or on the area indicated in red. I found a number stamped on the block water jacket plug. It is B-368471.... Is this it? If so, what a place to put it where it is on a part that is replaceable.

Yes that's the serial number but when looking up a parts diagram, put a 0 in front of the B...0B368471. That number comes up as model number 1045412BD which makes it a 1988 MERCURY 45 ELPTO
