I have a mercruiser 454 gen 4 I think.
Engine tag serial#b830792
Block cast #1401544
Head cast#14092360
I'm changing the cam and need to know about valve adjustment and engine timing and so much more. Some say #16 is the right manual but it's says gen 5 and up.
Which manual do I get or where can I find all the info at?
This is my first post and I'm a new member.
I have a 1986 Baja force 250 with 454.It had many probs when I bought it so I ended up buying a parts engine to get it back to original.but the top end needs replacing due to previous mechanic installing the wrong cam that doesn't have a mechanical fuel pump lobe and it gets worse from there so that's why I bought a parts engine to fix it back but I decided to put a little better flat tappet cam in.

Hi, your engine serial number 0B830792 brings your model number up to be 474S110AS which helps show your engine year to be 1988 model year 7.4L BRAVO drive... The engine service manual would be merc part number 90-816463 otherwise known as manual number 15...

The following would be of just a few available engine parts catalogs for you too,

And here's a bravo stern drive parts catalog too,
https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bravo-one-0b664190-thru-0f729999-1

Also have a quick look at location C for any numbers or letters to check for a few other details regarding your engine model though it appears yours would possibly be letters XW on page 11 of 16,

If it is a Hydraulic Cam, then the standard Chevy, One turn in from Zero Lash.
What do you mean by "a better Flat Tappet Cam"? Hopefully you are not making the Mistake of using an Automotive/Truck Cam Grind. Marine Engines require different Camshaft Specs to provide a Torque Curve more suited to the Requirements of a Marine Engine.

Use the block casting to determine if you have a Mk4 block or a Gen V block

Mk 4 361959 or 1401544
Gen V 10114182

To look up casting numbers, go here https://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm

Being 1988 per the serial number makes it a Mk 4, 2- piece block

As indicated above, make sure the cam you choose is a marine cam and has to be below 270 degrees due to tbe wet exhaust

I would suggest you contact Comp Cams, they would be the Best Source. Due to changes in Valve Train Geometry, you may need to use Roller Rocker Arms, and possibly slightly different length Pushrods

I don't know how to post a link to the forum.

To share a link, copy the website's address from your browser, then paste it directly into the forum's text editor using the Insert Link tool or by highlighting your own text and pressing Ctrl + V(Windows) or Command + V (Mac). [1, 2]

. Copy the URL
Go to the webpage you want to share, click the address bar at the top of your screen to highlight the full URL, and press Ctrl + C (or Cmd + C on Mac) to copy it.

Add the link to your post
In the forum text editor, you can paste the link in one of two ways:
    • Create a hyperlink: Highlight the specific words in your post that you want to be clickable, and click the link icon (which looks like a chain link or globe) in the forum's formatting toolbar. Paste the link into the box that pops up and click OK or Insert. [1, 2]
    • Paste directly: If you prefer the link itself to show, simply place your cursor exactly where you want it in your post and press Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (Mac). [1]
Test your link
Before submitting your post, many forums provide a Preview option so you can test if the link directs you to the correct page.
