What would be the proper procedure for setting-up a power trim and tilt unit on a '72 1150 merc outboard. I recently purchased an original PT&T unit off of an 1150 pump, lift unit, controller the whole works but, I need advice on setting it up, making sure I get it bleed properly and any other info on the limit switch etc.

Re: set-up of power trim and tilt unit

Monk, The trim brackets attach to the motor clamp bracket. Use a 1/2" SS bolt through the trim bracket into the hole where the old shock top mounted. Actually the top shock mounting bolt is likely the correct bolt to use. The trim cylinder then mounts to the top of the trim bracket, wiht a 1/2" bolt and locknut and the original shock bottom mount. Now the motor is installed in the boat, and the hoses run to the cylinders. You cannot mix them up since the hoses come in two sizes. The three button panel mount on the dash, and the three wire harness plugs into the trim pump. The pump is directly wired to the battery. FIll the resevoir with 5W-30 oil. Now bleed each cylinder seperately. Open the top bleed screw (SS phillips), and run the pump in the down position until thee are no more air bubbles. Now bleed the other side. Now turn the cylinder until the other SS vleed screw faces up. The cylinder must be in the horizontal position for this to occur. Now bleed this cylinder until there is nor more air bubles. Repeat for the othe side. The trim limit switch is on the starboard trim cylinder. it should be adjusted such that the middle button will trim the motor until the motor is just inside the clamp bracket.

Monk,
If you are interested, I have a copy of the installation instructions for the power trim and tilt that I can send you. If you want them, PM me (assuming it works!)

Re: set-up of power trim and tilt unit

thanks for the info. I should have made myself a little clearer...my PT&T unit came as a compete unit..it was simply unbolted from the motor...transom bracket, hydraulic units etc. all assembled. I was looking for tips and general knowledge from y'all before i started. I did however, notice my cylinders have an allen head set screw and a straight slotted screw, which one is the bleed screw, I have a feeling it's the straight slotted one but, " thinking isn't knowing" so i ask you. Also my wiring harness has the three pin conf. there is two other leads coming off of it, a blue and blue/white in one connector and a purple w/white stripe in another conn. are these for the limit switch. And the 12V power supply to the pump must hook to the insulated block on the pump, does this all sound right?

Re: set-up of power trim and tilt unit

Lets try this again...I have the whole set of instructions now, but I am not very good at linking. Let me know if this doesn't show up correctly. (Thanks Rick for helping with the last one)

Here is the entire set of Installation Instructions. Look down on page 24 and see if this helps with the wiring. This shows the two solenoid version of the pump (one is for up, the other for down) - I have a wiring diagram of the one solenoid pump somewhere at home - let me know if you need that one. You are right about the two leads at the connector, they go to the trim limit switch.

Pages 24-26 describe bleeding and adjusting the system. The bleeding instructions may not work for you depending on the cylinders you have (the instructions cover self-bleeding cylinders) Sorry, I can't help you out there.
