You don't "set up" the esa switch, you adjust the cable to shift in and out of gear properly. If all is working, the switch knows when to activate.
Having said that, it would help if you posted what engine and drive setup you have. Be accurate. Nothing wrong with posting model numbers, years, hp, type of drive and all that minor stuff.
sorry about that its a chevy 4.3 omc leg 1983ime a bit confused to how switch works as there are only 2 lugs that switch goes over in either ger switch is resting on outer lug is this right cheers mat
The switch needs to be in the groove in the center while in neutral, forward or reverse.
Just as a refresh, what have you done as far as changing the lower shift cable? You have the actual OMC service manual which describes the adjustment procedure for the lower shift cable?
hi i have a manual for my omc 1993 4.3 v6 ive replaced lower shift cable and both upper cables as i can not get special tools to do the job i was counting on sum experience to help as over hear there are no dealers only ebay and this site iff you can help me step by step i would be very graitfull at this moment in time i can get all gears but switch sits on top of the notches not in them so where do i start i bought the boat in bits with a recon leg witch i have fitted i have replaced all mooving things on lower shift cable just need advice i can do it but get confused easily hope you can help cheers mat
yes bell crank is set at 90 but the shift fork i have not adusted but can i check this without stripping leg i no itl have to cum off but thats easy can sum one give me a measurement with it compleate iff i do it how maual ses i can only get one gear iff i set it up so i get all gears no esa
The height is specified in the manual and is also referenced in the site above. You need to have the leg off to check the measurement.
Do you have a helper that holds the bellcrank at 90 while you adjust the cable at the engine? There is a tool that does this for you normally. This is a fairly critical setting if you want to make the adjustment correctly. All bets are off if you don't have the shift fork adjusted right either. The shift fork is set correctly will engage the bellcrank without moving it if its really set at 90 degrees.
Stuart Hastings(link above) has a detailed explanation of how to do the adjustments. Read it and understand every step before doing your adjustments and you will not have a problem.
help ime still having trouble with setting switch ive got all gears but esa never ends up in the bottom of the groove when you are in gear only at neutral if u touch it it goes where its ment to iff i un do cables it does aswell ive read theres a different spring iff so how can i tell iff its the right one iff i cant sort it this way ime going to put a micro switch in handle so you depress it to activate it would this work
