Re: setting up esa

You don't "set up" the esa switch, you adjust the cable to shift in and out of gear properly. If all is working, the switch knows when to activate.
Having said that, it would help if you posted what engine and drive setup you have. Be accurate. Nothing wrong with posting model numbers, years, hp, type of drive and all that minor stuff.

Re: setting up esa

The switch needs to be in the groove in the center while in neutral, forward or reverse.

Just as a refresh, what have you done as far as changing the lower shift cable? You have the actual OMC service manual which describes the adjustment procedure for the lower shift cable?

Here is the setup on my 1991 OMC Cobra GM (Chevy) 4.3 l. It is in the neutral position when this pic was taken.

Re: setting up esa

Did you set the bellcrank at the drive at 90 degrees when installing the lower shift cable?
Was the shift fork at the proper height?

When you did both of these, the switch should rise in the center of the V.

Re: setting up esa

Do you have a factory manual? Not a Seloc or a Clymer but the real factory manual?

Have you read this site before?
http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

The height is specified in the manual and is also referenced in the site above. You need to have the leg off to check the measurement.

Do you have a helper that holds the bellcrank at 90 while you adjust the cable at the engine? There is a tool that does this for you normally. This is a fairly critical setting if you want to make the adjustment correctly. All bets are off if you don't have the shift fork adjusted right either. The shift fork is set correctly will engage the bellcrank without moving it if its really set at 90 degrees.

Stuart Hastings(link above) has a detailed explanation of how to do the adjustments. Read it and understand every step before doing your adjustments and you will not have a problem.
