Hi,
I had been looking for an islander for a while now and kept getting beat out to the deals. (Like the $200 '95 hull- no motor or out drive, but had everything else) I have been continuing the search and looked at a few other boats since then. Well, it just so happened work took me to Ohio. And that is where I found this 76 islander! have been talking to the owner for sometime, and went to look at it today., Long story short, it somehow it followed me home to Lancaster! I did not get any pictures myself but I have pictures of the boat that was sent to me by the owner. I was told it needs a complete restore, as the transom and floor are soft. Upon inspection, it does need replaced. I figure I will park it somewhere dry this winter, gut it and then rebuild. I am good with wiring, painting and working with motors. My father is a cabinet maker so I'm sure he will have some good ideas for rebuilding all the wooden parts. It has a mercruiser 165 I6 and the pre-alpha one outdrive. I don't know anything about the outdrive, but I am familiar with that engine. We have a newly rebuilt automotive 250 sitting in our shop floor right now that came out of a 69 chevy. If I can't get this motor running, we will sacrifice the automotive engine to build on for the boat. I hope to get this boat in working order by august. That would be new floors, transom, carpet, and rebuilt/repaired engine and outdrive. I need to start reading the mercruser i/o forum and get an idea what I'm up against with this outdrive. I will start a thread in the rebuild section when I get to work on it. That will start next week, as I will be deer hunting this coming week! Here are what pictures I have. I will post more tomorrow when the sun is up. Im a happy camper to get this boat, and the aluminum on it is in great condition. I need to weigh it as well- the thing seems very heavy. I was told it has been uncovered for the last year. I imagine the foam is waterlogged and that is where the weight is coming from. Sorry if Im rambling on and on, i have been up since 1:30 and need sleep. I was just much to excited to not post something!

I was told the trim cylinders are unhooked by the original owner because they didn't have a battery to put them up. They then used the ratchet strap to hold the outdrive up and tied the cylinders up to keep them out of the way.

I don't think I'd waste time weighing it til you're thru with the rebuild. Deck, carpetting, etc are probably full of water too. The hull looks to be in good shape. Good luck with your project.

Congrats on your find, seven. Welcome to the Tin Hat division of iboats. You have plenty of builds here to go by. Those big gals are like the Holy Grail. This the first Islander I've seen with back to back lounge seats. Have fun with the rebuild and good luck hunting.

Nice..Nice..Nice

Be sure to take lots of pics NOW!. You'l find yourself transforming the boat very quickly and you'll forget what it looked like when you started. Good for you.

Great find Seven, I wouldn't spend too much on the out drive if it needs a lot of work, you can buy an SEI new replacement for $1300. with a three year warranty.

I took a pile of pictures of the boat today. It is sitting in it's temporary home in the yard right now. I hope to have it moved into the shop in the next week or so. I will then begin my rebuild thread.

Too cool!
Just have a mod retitle this thread when you start the restoration so you can keep everything together.
It's great to have the very early before shots to compare to the after shots on page 87 or whatever. :D

I don't get the rollers on top of the bunk? Are these a good idea, or bad news?

I like this picture, but it's hard to see the boat. It just looks massive compared to the others from the back door! (15' 1957 duracraft and 14' 1970 springbok)
DSC09625.jpg

Well, that's all for now! I will pm a mod to re-title the thread when I star working on it.

seven, you have don't have poured foam and that's a a good thing. Much easier to get out. You don't have to worry about hardened valve seats. Plenty of older cars and boats are running around fine on unleaded. You have a '76 model and unleaded was mandated for new vehicles starting in '75 so GM already took care of that for you.

Re: Well, I did it!

Congrats seven_magnum. Nice hull! You've got at least 3 Starcrafters in your area (me, yorkboater, Tim Fives) so don't hesitate to give us a shout if you want some help or ideas.

We'd love to see you in this line up next year!

Re: Well, I did it!

Re: Well, I did it!

It took me a little while to get started on the rebuild due to hunting season recently, and snowboarding when I can get the chance. But I finally caught a break in things and got a chance to get this started! I had a half day of work today. (The second half, so I got a morning to work on things) I am happy with the progress I have made so far.

First thing to go, were the seats. I put them in the top of the shed for now. I don't know a thing about upholstery, but I imagine I will learn. I want to save everything usable I tear out for a template for new, if nothing else. Some of the seats were ok, but they all need some attention. About half of them have cracks in the vinyl. The cushions in the cuddy are about the same. The largest one is cracked pretty badly in areas, but the smaller ones are in great shape.

Anyhow, out they came! After I carried out all the seats and cushions, I just grabbed a hold of the boxes for the seats and pulled them right out! I guess there was just a little more rot there than I had thought... haha

I decided the next logical step would be to get the engine out of there. I was just going to start ripping and tearing, but after looking at the wiring I decided I need to record some of the mess in there. I don't know who wired this last, but my goodness. Thats all I can say! I need to find a wiring manual when I put this back together.

DSC09917.jpg

So the next order of business was to pull the outdrive. I don't have a manual, but after some research discovered this is an easy process. I put the shifter in forward, unbolted the drive and gave it a pull. I have to admit, I was expecting a little more trouble than that!

DSC09890.jpg

DSC09895.jpg

I did find a little something when I pulled the drive off. I guess this came out of the manifold?

DSC09891.jpg

Then I worked on getting the engine ready to come out. I took off any wire that looked like it may be a problem and recorded where they went, and put a tag on them. I don't know why I tagged them because I want to rewire the entire boat, but I did it anyhow. The only problem I had was the riser on the exhaust manifold. 3 of the 4 nuts came right off their studs. The 4th and last one went to the top of the stud, and that was it. The stud came loose and eventually the entire thing came out of the manifold. I left it in the riser, and moved the riser out of the way. I will worry about little things like that later! The only thing I left in place was the 4 mounting bolts.

Once the engine was prepped for pulling I headed off to work. I was an hour early and had big hopes for the fork truck...

I took out the two rear mounting bolts off the inner transom plate with ease. The front mounting bolts proved to be a little more difficult. I was expecting lag bolts, but they were through bolts. And the nuts were sunk well into the mounting board.. and it was rotted enough that they just rotates. I was able to get one out, but the port bolt wouldn't budge, even with an impact gun.

Plan B was to just remove the entire block of wood along with the engine. I tried to unscrew the 4 machine screws that held it in place. When I put pressure on the screw head it sunk into the wood. I used a small straight screw driver to pry the head up enough to work with it and it pulled right out! The other 3 also popped right out with the screw driver. There was nothing holding them in place. Ok, all is clear to pull it.

I rigged up some straps to a fork extension and started to lift...

Re: Well, I did it!

I pulled a little bit at a time and kept checking. Something didn't seem loose so I looked around and found a lower shift cable was still attached by a little metal clip. I pulled this out and it was free! So I continued to pull a little at a time checking to make sure everything was ok.

Now it's sitting in the back of my truck. I am going to put it on an engine stand tonight and that is where it will sit this weekend. I am going on a trip to North Carolina for work on Wednesday and I am supposed to limit my hours right now. (To 40 a week, no overtime if we can help it) Anyhow, that means I don't go in to work on Monday! The plan is to pull the floor and foam then. Maybe I will be extra motivated and finish recording the wiring mess that is in the boat and get all of that out of there as well. If it wants to rain, I will start tearing the engine down for a rebuild. All in all, I am pleased with the work I was able to accomplish this morning. Hopefully I will keep some steam into this over the winter. Winter is my busy time of the year, but I want to be on the water with this thing this year! So keep to to that!

Also, If I could have a mod move this to the rebuild section and re-title the thread for me I would appreciate it greatly!

Re: Well, I did it!

Oh, and I found I really need to get a good manual. I would like some kind of a wiring schematic for this thing as well because all the wires are shot. I am shooting for reliability so I want to do it right. Also, I don't know if I am going to rebuild this outdrive or purchase an SEI, but I need something that will give me info on them as well as the how-to's. (Maintenance, aligning the drive line, ect. I looked around online for manuals, but I am confused. What would you guys recommend? Will a manual for this era of Mercruiser give me what I need? I appreciate your help. I am sure I will have a whole pile of questions, but I will get through it in the end. Thank you!
