We recently had a convicted registered sex offender move into a home across the street from us with a single Mom. The Mom lost custody of her two teen daughters for allowing this man into her house.

After about a month, The Sex Offender purchased a vehicle. (Previously the Mom did not have a license and he did not have a car when he first moved in)

The occupants are renters and the rest of the immediate neighbors are homeowners. I have multiple vehicles and trailers and for the last six years I have parked one vehicle in the street. The way our neighborhood is laid out, the driveways are staggered. When I am parked in the street, the rear of my vehicle is even with the edge of the SO driveway. In the last week, He has called the Sherrif on me twice and both times the sherrif told him I was legally parked and there is nothing he could do about it.

My question is How can I get this guy out of our neighborhood legally? How can I make things so uncorfotable for him that they will move?

I have a teen daughter, as do most of the immediate neighbors and while I do not think he would try anything, I do not trust him even when I can see him.

Does anyone have any thoughts, advice, or opinions on the matter?

Before you get too worked up, it's worth trying to find out what happened. We've got sex offenders that register with us who've done some despicable things and we've got some who were 18 with a 17 year old girlfriend whose parents got mad and reported him. One of the guys that comes to mind married his "victim" when she turned 18. He was 19. Kind of a rock and a hard place deal for him. Heck, I feel bad for the guy.

You really want him out? Open a day care. Done deal. He'll have to move or be in violation.

sounds like ya don't like the way the sex offender is hassling you about your parking. i don't like the parking around my house either. i live next to a university. they have all on street parking when school is going. which is most of the time. my answer to that was to open up my back yard to being able to park there. not where i wanna park, but i see no other choice.
as for the sex offender. well, i've met a few as i worked in a max prison for 9 years. when i first moved to my hood one of them had just got out, he lived behind me. very close, 2 or three houses away. my boy was very young. 5,6 ,7 i can't remember, but small. i had no problems with this man. later, another sex offender i knew from the joint moved in down the street. 3 or 4 houses away. i never had any problems with him either. both were friendly and caused 0 problems. now currently my neighbor just got out of prison for the last 12 or 13 years. he's a sex offender too. no problems with him either. just a friendly hello when we talk...
so imho. sex offender or not. they are still people and if they've done their time. i'll give them the benefit of doubt. untill they prove otherwise... and yes, i know, sex offenders have a high rate of recidivism of their crime. they're hard to cure.
will say my boy is grown up now so i don't have that concern. but i still live around these offenders. my guess would be, many do and don't even know it... plenty of people with bad ideas in the world ya know.

Unfortunately he has to live somewhere. I believe that in certain states the SO's have to report to their parole officer/social services that they have moved into a new neighborhood. If that is the case in your state, & if the SO hasn't reported his move ... then that may be your avenue to send him off. I would check with the local authorities and explain your concerns to them.

This may help also.. http://www.familywatchdog.us/default.asp

HarriTwo, I'm curious......how did you find out the guy was a sex offender? I understand that its public record but was wondering how you found out? Did someone tell you or did you search for SOs in your area or search for him individually?

Just curious.........

I agree with some of the above with Sex Offender designation being too broad. If I were you, and since this is in the conditional tense, I'd move to a neighborhood where felons couldn't afford to live. I can only presume felons have limited resources with a felony record eliminating certain areas from residency.

Happened here. They had a kid together. Parents of the girl got mad about something and turned the 18yr old in. Up to that point everything was fine with the girls parents. Now he's labeled for life.

I can go along with most of what was said except for what I hi-lited. I don't want it proven otherwise with my 16 year old daughter... That's why nobody wants them in their neighborhood. They don't want the SO proven otherwise with their child....

Around here they announce it on the evening news and say where the SO will be living.....

To the OP, legally there is nothing you can do. Just keep your radar up....

Wow, that mother must be a committed parent to choose this guy over them. I feel sorry for kids that just by sake of biology end up with scumbags as parents.

Let me see if I'm straight on this  The guy lives on the other side of the street from you, and you park one of your vehicles across the street from your house, in front of his house? Continuously parking across the street from your house wouldn't fly in our neighborhood and when the police have been called out on that type of complaint, the police have sided with the home owner being blocked, even if the vehicle was legally parked. (We have a very tight street for parking and all houses do not even have enough sidewalk to fit a vehicle in, in between the driveways. We installed a concrete slab so we could park another vehicle on our property because of this.)

Don't get me wrong, I have no love for renters who do not respect the neighborhood, we have had many .. Probably 75% of the people in our neighbor hood have been here for 10 years +, 50% been here for 15 years, and we work together when a situation comes around. We have made it uncomfortable for them and they either moved or stopped annoying everyone and disrupting our neighborhood. We found out one of them was a wanted felon and unluckily, they bailed before the feds could nab them, only missed them by a day or 2... Most of the renters have been great people though, I guess it's the luck of odds, sometimes you're going to loose.

Same goes for SO's, lots of young kids in our neighborhood and I wouldn't be to happy about a SO living in our neighborhood...

Well, you can look him up in your state registry http://www.city-data.com/so/so-Orange-Park-Florida.html which will give his description and offense. There is nothing you can do except be watchful.

DO NOT do anything dumb! You have a PM.

Consider this.... regardless of the circumstances ....... things could be worse so, keep a good attitude.

Many RSOs are respectable people who made one mistake in good faith and have been branded for life. Others are bone-fide scumbags who need to be in prison. He is not in prison.

You do not know anything more about him, but that is not your issue, Harritwo. Your issue is that he complained about your legal parking.

Put your prejudgement aside and go talk to him about the parking. Dealing with the RSO is none of your business, it is the State's business.

Re: Sex Offender as a Neighbor!

i work with a s.o and i must admit i use to treat him with a wide birth as i have kids of my own and there protection is my top priority. if we meet him in town i always had a uneasy felling. one day while working with him his gps unit got caught on a safety rail and it dropped a few feet he picked it up and looked at it then his face went pale. with in a minute his phone was ringing and the police were coming to pick him up. when dropped the gps anti tamper had gone into alarm so he had to be picked up by the police. the next day i asked him what he had done and he told me that when he was 18 his girlfriend was 16 and there parents reported him and he had to go to court. like a typical in love teenagers they meet back-up and this time he got to wear the gps tracker as part of the punishment for 5 years. its a real large box so theres no hiding it. now i dont see a s.o when i look at him i see a dumb teenager thats going to pay for the rest of his life. i come from a place where the legal age of consent is 16 and im still kinda confused that people can get married with there parents consent in the u.s.a younger than 18 but it still worries me that s.o's are living close to me as they dont grade the people on the list so ive had to educate my kids of stranger danger as well as explaining how bribery, threats and secrets are used. i see the best weapon is educating the kids on what to look out for. as for the parking forget who the person is and judge on how you would fell if other people parked legally in front of your house making it harder for you to see while leaving your drive etc.

Just read the paper -- many of those raping and murdering young women and kids are RSOs who previously "served their time" and got out of prison. Just because they got out does not mean that they shouldn't be locked up forever or worse.

Check and see what he did before getting worked up though. If it was something serious, be very worried. You can't cure or rehab someone who was sick enough to do something terrible in the 1st place.

Dealing with and protecting your family from an RSO most certainly is your job/business.

The issue of the sex offender and the parking are two completely different issues and not even sure why you needed to combine them.

Persoanlly, I wouldn't like it if you always parked your car in front of my house. Also, why did you bring up the fact that he purchased a car. How is this relevant?

As far as the SO, do what all the others are mentioning and find out what he is registered for. I would certainly want to know.

having retired after 30+ years of working in NC's prison system, I've seen way too many folks who are there for sex related offenses .... from my experience the comments already made concerning high recidivism rates for convicted sex offenders is definitely true, as it is for heavy drug users .... there is little that one can legally do to prevent them moving into your neighborhood so it sure pays to be highly vigilant

The need for dope can overcome the love of your children. It hurts but it's the truth. Then again, there's outright crummy parents who don't care about their kids and are happy to get rid of them when they reach their teen years regardless of what it takes to do so. Sad.

Re: Sex Offender as a Neighbor!

The way I read this, the OP never had a problem parking where he is ( btw I read it he is parking on his side but behind the other guys drive) until the guy bought a car. Now the guy has a hard time getting in and out of his own driveway. Thus the conflict.

OP, really want them out, Buy the property and don't renew the lease. Or talk to the landlord. I had a property and found out a released felon had moved in with his girlfriend. My lease was specific about who could live there and did not include him. Out they went.

Keep in mind even he has rights. Harassment may just end up costing you a bunch of money.

RSO, rapist, pedophile, not all the same thing.
A friend of mine got tagged as part of a nasty divorce and custody battle.

One out of every 35 residents in Orange Park Fl is an offender.
So that's about 1 per block.
Not sure if all are RSO from the website, but it looks like many are. (red, yellow, and blue boxes on the map)

You better start looking in all directions.

better the devil you know than the devil you don't

Dan and Bubba, what I read (and have seen with staggered drives) is that he parks in front of his OWN house, but the way the drives are laid out, it makes it HARD for the person across the street to back out of their driveway, without hitting him. Basiccally the drive across the street enters the road directly across from his back bumper. If I could draw a picture I would.
