Re: Shadow Bass Boat Restore

hi wet...

bondo above is correct so we will move on from there.

you asked how much grinding is too much.
that depends on what you want to do....if you are not going to glass the area.....any...leave it.
if you are adding new glass on top of old glass. grind it just till you take away the very top layer of resin and are into fiberglass strands. (this is what i call rough and scuff.)

why???......because fiberglass resin by it self is brittle...it needs the glass to be strong, you want to take away as much of the brittle as you can.....(dont get anal on this bud) a quick swipe with a grinder and its done.
when you add the new resin your first layer on top of the old will be a layer of chopped strand matt. the scuffed area will provide far better bonding.
that...and......there will be a wax layer on the very top of all the fiberglass on the inner hull.....this wax has to come off or you wont get a good bond at all.....yeah...it may lok like it sticks...but it will be very weak!.

as far as your stringers......it looks like they used foam as a shape to glass over....so the glass is the stringer....tough to say without touching and feeling....but the pics look like it.

i can also say......it sounds like you are having the same questions we all did on our first restoration....a quick word of advice......dont over think everything....boat building is very simple..and so far it looks like you are right on track !;)

cheers

Re: Shadow Bass Boat Restore

oh.....your next question will be where do i get the foam to make the stringer shape....

you dont....

you can add some pour in foam and shape it with sand paper. then cover it with wax paper and glass over the wax paper.
the easiest way is to put some wood in there and glass over it.
dont worry about making the exact shape...you are just continuing the stringer and making a bilge area. this in not an inboard...so height does not matter....just make an area where the water will collect and can drain out of the boat.

Re: Shadow Bass Boat Restore

Thanks for the help and the info guys. Turns out I am probably grinding too much, I hear all the grinding y'all are doing and I feel like it should take a lot of work. I will be going back in with poly, since that all the info I seem to be able to find is "99% of boats were made of poly because it was cheap..." and because I will need to spread my money over the whole project. One more question, since the rest of the foam was soaked and I'm not sure about the foam stringers, should I remove them or leave them?

I had to do some honey-do's today, but I will go back to the boat tomorrow 'cause it is currently in the air on its way off the trailer. The trailer needs to be rewired, sand blasted, and repainted. The boat also needs a cradle to sit in to support the sides since they want to open up on me 'cause I have to take the cap off to do anything:( U.S. Composites will soon get an order for some poly resin, 1.5 oz CSM, and probably some 18 oz roving. Have not settled on the "peanut butter" yet, but I need to put the transom wood together soon, before it starts getting cold. I know I saw some calculations for how much resin and mat I will need somewhere in here.... (it's a v-hull 18';)) May have been in that huge-***** hull extension thread somewhere:eek:

Got more pictures and questions coming, thanks so far.

Re: Shadow Bass Boat Restore

I have just bought a 90 Shadow that is 20.5" and is a tunnel. I have to do a transom and rear knee braces in it due to rot. Starting removing the cap this morning. How did your project turn out? Got any more pics? I was enjoying reading about yours.

Thanks

Rob,
