Looking for any tips into buiding a shift cable tool to save some time. I have decided to change the lower cable this weekend but no one has the part or wants to lend it for this weekend.

I have researched a few tips:
1. Weld a nut to the end of a craftsman 3/8 drive deep 9/16 socket
2. Turn down the socket outside diameter.

Do I really need to turn down the diameter? No access to a lathe. I can weld the nut though.

Any other suggestions?

Weld 2 deepwell socket sockets together. You don't have to turn anything down if the socket isn't to big around to fit on the cable.

PS: If you are using an OEM cable, just unscrew the white tip. Don't try it on the aftermarket stuff.

You could get a 9/16 spark plug socket with a hex on it's end, they fit Ford trucks, you can get em at Sears/Craftsman. Then put another 9/16 long over it. Voila, double-long socket.

couple of more ideas:

A 1/2" drive -9/16" deep socket I think is long enough as is, (did mine last year)

Cut off the old one and use a regular deep socket to remove, then use a 9/16" nut driver to tighten. (The handle is hollow and long enough too).

Whatever way you go, make sure the socket that is turn the cable is 6 point! 12 could just round off the brass hex area.

I found an extra deep 1/2 in drive 9/16 socket at a kical auto parts chain that works great.
