Gents, Have a 97 Evinrude that I dropped the gear case to replace seals. Putting gear case back on motor and noticed the holes that the shift rod connects to(Behind starter) did not line up perfectly. Is a 3/8 head & the screw has a smooth area where it rides on the assy, about 1inch long.Able to screw it on w/ a little coaxing, then second guessed myself if it shouldve been a perfect fit(as it came off last fall). Am I OK w/this fit or try to adjust up & down or side to side. Poss. manipulate the gear shift while doing so. I am 99.9% certain the rod is still in same position where it screws into gear box.

Assuming the shift rod hasn't been rotated, just wiggle/manipulate the shifter till the screw aligns.

Re: Shift rod connecting screw

I just replaced the impeller in my 70hp Johnson. When I put the gearcase back on the holes would not line up. I got frustrated for a moment and then realized that while putting the gearcase back on I inadvertently pushed the rod into the foward gear postion (maybe reverse). I just walked around and put the shift lever in postion until it lined up. Perfect no stress now!
Dont know if it applies to you!

Guess what--Shuoda left it alone(I was waiting for reply and called evinrude. Now I think the rod hasbeen turned as I was trying to get it on--Can you tell by looking at rod when its out what darn gear it is in , if you remember?

all i have work on were a little older than that but rod pulled up al the way is reverse, when i do my lower unit, i always take it apart in reverse, then when i put the leg back on, i always manage to bump the end of the rod and it will bump into nutreal or forward. once i get some bolts in to hold the leg up, i just shift the linkage to get that little screw to line up.
