Re: shifter adjustment

An OEM Service manual is your best bet. One may be purchased from marineengine com. Have your model number ready, as they will ask for it to assure you get the correct manual. Obviously the problem can be the shift adjustment, the cables themeselves or the throttle control.

Re: shifter adjustment

While you are waiting for your manual, examine very closely, with a helper up at the controls, the operation of the shift mechanism. Look for slop in the cable travel, look where the cable attaches to the linkages and follow the mechanical path all the way to where the shift rod connects to the linkage. There could be a broken weld up under there....
Look for large movement of the throttle lever with no movement of the cable. Stuff like that.

Just shift it slowly forward/reverse, engine off, looking for slop. You can help the engine mechanically by rotating the prop a bit as the helper shifts....

Re: shifter adjustment

Is the question to me? If so, I did not say your problem was adjustment. Re-read my post.

Well, not necessarily. It could be a worn out cable (you didn't say if it was working properly and slowly went bad, quit working all of a sudden, or what). As daselbee said, watch the shifter in action, you're looking for lost motion indicating either a worn out cable or that something is broken. It's highly unlikely that all of a sudden it needs to be adjusted without something else going on(though it's possible that adjusting a cable that's nearing the end of it's life might buy you a bit more time). And, as already mentioned, the gearcase won't want to engage without someone rotating the prop as the shifter is operated.

Re: shifter adjustment

Well...with four posts you might not be aware of shop.evinrude.com.

Go to that site, select Johnson, 2000, 150, and then your model.
Select the "Cylinder and Crankcase section, and study the drawing paying special attention to
#s 45, 38, 50, 28, and 32. Those parts are down at the bottom of the drawing.

Locate those parts on your engine and make sure they are in good working order. Look for a broken weld on #50 where the shaft welds to the arm. Just a thought....something to check.

I do believe you will need to remove the stbd lower cowl half to see it well enough.

Has anyone had the lower unit off....for a water pump job....if so, did the problem seem to start then?

Re: shifter adjustment

You ever change the gear oil? Check the shift switch, this switch drops 1/2 cylinders to relieve the pressure on the farward gear for easy shifting into neutral, then reverse. After you check what daselbee said, and repair, lub, whatever. Adjust the cable by disconnecting the shift cable at the engine, shift the control into farward gear, 3/4 throttle, shift gearcase into farward gear, adjust cable trunnion until cable end will slip onto the shift linkage.
