I just bought a 1987 wellcraft 19 ft boat, I want to rev it up , but no button on it , so I can rev this motor up. do I need to buy a diff shifter

The button may not be obvious, but if you tell us the information above I'm sure someone will know.

Need to know what you have. FYI not all shifters have a button for throttle only. On some, the whole lever will slide towards port side to get in the throttle only mode.

EDIT: FYI again. If you didn't know already, the engine should not be revved very high while on the muffs.

all I know is its a 165 mercury motor and I asume a mercury leg , Ill have to go out to lake and see name of shifter on it

If there is no button, you may have to put it in neutral and pull the shift lever out and move it forward for throttle only.
If it won't pull out, post a picture of the control. You may have a different control from what Mercruiser used.
