I Have An 88 Bass Tracker With A 70hp Evinrude It Wont Go Into Reverse And Some Times Will But Wont Stay. Would You Think Clutch Dog Or Shift Cable Linkage Out Of Whack? ALSO WHAT IS A GOOD MANUAL? I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A JOHNSON/EVINRUDE MANUAL BUT I CANT FIND ONE FOR 88 YEAR MODELS. I HAD A SELOC BUT I DID NOT FIND IT TO BE VERY GOOD BESIDES IT ONLY WENT TO 40HP.

Re: Shifting

First step is to disconnect the shift cable and see if it shifts manually into reverse and stays there. If it does, then you probably need to adjust the cable.

Have you recently had the lower unit off on that outboard?

Re: Shifting

sounds like a shift cable adjustment i agree wth disconnecting the cables but before you do unsnap the cable supports and simply tightened or loosen (usually ) tightened the slack will slide in gear if not then what cat said is the way to go

Re: Shifting

Check the simpler stuff first as suggested. Much better to find you have to adjust the cables than realising that after you tear the motor apart.
