Please do not give me your bleeding heart stories about hardship for your business. If your business cannot survive unless you gouge your labor, you should not be in business in the first place!

Tell that to all the steel workers, the auto workers, or manufactuers of durable goods in this country. How many manufacturers have to go belly up before you realize that the socialist utopia is a myth.

Lets try this.

Please do not give me your bleeding heart stories about hardship for your family. If your family cannot survive unless you gouge the system, you should not have had a family in the first place!

A good days of work should be rewarded with a good reward.

FYI, a good days work gets a wage not a reward. Promotion would be your reward for going the extra mile. Oh, and by the way, try and get a good days work out of most these days. Not easy.

As the wage is known up front I would expect an HONEST days work from everyone. Honest = Good.

With a thread title like this, I wonder why JB is curious why this board gets caustic at times?

You certainly are right when you say that some unions try to bleed the system dry without regard for the economical situation in this world. They would rather destroy themselves than look reality in the face.
There are a million shades of grey and nothing is either black or white. To deny a worker an honest wage is criminal. To destroy a company with irrational demands is just as criminal.
It is however very hard to trust big companies when ,like in the Delta Airlines example, labor is forced to give up its wage scales and its pensions in order to save the company,to see the company breach trust the very next day by giving the directors hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses.

Which manufacturing jobs are employing labor at the minimum wage?

I would say their probems are due more to pensions, retirement bennies, and healthcare.

• Between 1998 and 2001, the number of small business establishments grew twice as quickly in states with higher minimum wages (3.1% vs. 1.6%).
• Employment grew 1.5% more quickly in high minimum wage states.
• Annual and average payroll growth was also faster in higher minimum wage states.

Opponents of minimum wage increases often criticize its “target efficiency.” Since receipt of the minimum wage is not tied to income, critics argue, some of the beneficiaries of the increase are likely to reside in high-income families, and thus don’t really need the extra income. In fact, as shown in Figure 6, the gains from a minimum wage increase flow largely to those in the bottom third of the income scale6.

The figure shows the share of gains from a simulated $1.00 increase in the minimum wage in the year 2000, by income decile. It also shows the distribution of income by decile, allowing a comparison between the distribution of the wage increase to the distribution of income. The distribution of both variables is highly skewed in opposite directions. Family income, as is well-known, is concentrated at the top. The top 10% of families, for example, with an average income of $181,000 in 2000, held 25% of income that year. Their share of the minimum wage increase was 3.4%.

Rolmops,

With this I agree whole heartedly. It is an employers responsiblity to make sure his workers are paid on time, at the agreed amount, in a safe work environment. Not all jobs can be enjoyable, but they should be safe and any smart employer will recognize and make allowances for those who perform some of the more unfullfilling roles. And I agree, that some employers expectations are irrational. Most of those employers are either unethical by nature or they are just stupid businessmen. I had a discussion with my old boss several years ago, and he figured the the company had invested over a million dollars in my training. (travel, expenses, wages, benefits, etc.) Upsetting me, messin' with me, or making an untenable situation just isn't in the companies best interest. It is just bad business.

No I am not....my view simply differs from yours in this example. I have a lot of conservative views, I also have a few typically more liberal ones. Its called independent thought...........

Thats is why I even posted in this thing. I saw the "dumb" label thrown about simply because the opinion differed from his own. That is surely the best way to have intelligent conversation isnt it?

Thats what I am here for........I learn stuff all the time here. I would love to have intelligent conversation on these issues, but when you get called "dumb" or "marxist" simply because you have a SINGLE opinion that varies from someone elses. I sometimes wonder why I even bother replying to some of this stuff.

Because stating your case on your own terms, rightously, is a reward unto yourself. Post away, we may not agree, but we can learn together. d:)

Pony,
don't feel bad about the name calling, that comes when you have them on their knees,

looks like some what of several business owners here, myself included, and if you have any employee that does not service you for a minimum of 70% of your total pay out for that particular position you are a poor businessman. that includes the guy sweeping the floor so you have the time to make more money, the girl filling papers and answering the phone, so you have time to make more money, etc.
min. wage is a joke and yes it should be raised, if you cannot pay someone at least 10.00 per hour you then have time to do it yourself.
And NO I am not a lib

Your post reminds me of a rather well to do cattle rancher I was talking to one night. He said, "I wasn't very good in school, but I do know how to add and subtract." ;) Exactly what kind of business are you in and do you come by your handle honestly? ;)

my business is various fabrications for boat manufacturing companies, and we also survey vessels for insurance companies, and buyers pre purchase

Re: Good job you dumb liberals...

Raising min. wage only serves to boost inflation. The money has to come from somewhere. We all pay for it.

Ayuh,.........

Combine this with the recent spike in Oil Prices,........

The Liberals will Have that Recession they're Looking for,......
So they can Blame George.........

Our Economy is Strong,......
It's taken a few years to recover from the Massive Blow it took, on an Already Limping economy left by the Liberals, on 9-11-01.......

With a Double Wammy,.... Oil,+ a Spike in Wages,.......

It Just Might Tank Again.....................................

Hmmmmmmmm, More Left Religion here too! I see. Let's try some critical thinkin' here folks, (very dangerous ta Libs). If havin' the lefts' god: BIG GOVERNMENT, (Federal Government is their supreme god, and the Supreme Court is the best part 'cause ya can't fight it once the Supremes decide: don't ya know), set the wage a li'l North o' seven bucks; WHY NOT $70.00 per hour or $700.00 per hour? HMMMMMMMMMMMMM?? Since you followers o' the Religion o' Control want big nanny ta tell ya how ta run your biz n' all? If ya think the Government knows all sees all, why don't we go all the way? Ya guessed her Gents, (sorry if there is a Lady in the croud): let's do it all the way n' let god own everything! That's Communism right? Be carefull what ya wish for. Respectfully JR
