Short To Long Shaft

Hi folks. My first new thread here on the forum and a newbie to working on outboards. I've already learned alot here just by reading random posts. I have two Vintage Johnson Outboards. One is a 1962 5.5HP Sea Horse Model CDL-19 Long Shaft. The other is a 1965 6HP Sea Horse Model CD-22M Short Shaft. The towers and gear casings look identical except for the spacer plate in the long shaft motor. Is it possible to remove the drive shaft, shift lever, water tube and the spacer plate from the 1962 long shaft motor and put them onto the 1965 short shaft motor to make it a long shaft?

I ordered a repair manual for the '65 motor but it hasn't arrived yet. Hoping it will be here by the weekend so I can tear into it. From other posts it sounds like an easy job if I have the right parts. Will I need any gaskets or O-rings?

Re: Short To Long Shaft

The 5.5 shift rod goes clear to the top, the 6 has a disconnect where the gearcase comes off. Can you swap the whole thing? Maybe, but it would encourage somebody to drop the gearcase on the 5.5 without pulling the powerhead, and when he does the main bearing seal will fall apart. That seal is vital.

Good info. So if I pull the powerhead on the 5.5 first, can I then remove the gearcase with the driveshaft intact and use it on the 6 Horse with the spacer and longer water tube? I'd consider swapping powerheads but the tiller bar controls on the 5.5 are worn out and on the 6 Horse they are in good shape.

Re: Short To Long Shaft

I read your reply again. I see now it is the shift lever and not the driveshaft on the 5.5 that does not disconnect at the gearcase. Thanks
