Really, weird how all those un-married people have kids. :D

My point. A license is meaningless if it is not enforced.:)

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

I asked this before, why is everybody in such a hurry at the loading/unloading area? Nobody started out being perfect, and it will take longer for some than others.

Sometimes I am not that good at backing the trailer down the ramp and sometimes I am not that good and getting the boat on the trailer, but I am doing my best to do it as quickly as possible. If I take an extra 5-10 minutes what did you lose by waiting for me?

I have a good bit of experience backing up trailers too, but there are just some times when I just can not get it going right and other times I look as good as anybody doing it. I never ask my wife to go part the truck and trailer though. That would just be asking for trouble.

I back the boat down and unload it. We tie it up at the dock together as far out of the way as possible and then I park the truck and trailer and get back as quickly as I can. Once I am back to the boat we are out of there. Everything is loaded in the boat long before I back down the ramp and nothing comes out of the boat until we are off the ramp.

I don't like to be in a hurry on the water either, but we are . . . Here's my list of reasons:

1) I have a couple of ramps where I launch that if I don't time it right there can be as much as an hour wait in line, maybe more . . . that can cause some heat for sure.

2) Speaking of the heat . . . Anywhere on the Colorado can be 115 F. Leaving the wife in the boat, or having kids on the dock, can really, really suck . . .

3) Our trips require a 260 mile tow one way. When we get there, we are ready . . . It's been solid desert for 90% of that trip, the blue water is beckoning, the Turkey Vultures are chirping . . .

I'll think of more, but it's different agendas. I honestly wish I was just poking along, but that's not our current situation most of the time.

Ohio now requires anyone born on or after 1/1/82 needs a license to operate a powered boat over 10 hp. You can't get the license until your 16th birthday. No kids running jet skis is in Ohio! They had to set a starting date or the old farts would rebel.

How many times have you hauled your rig down to the ramp and discovered a long line and lengthy wait? As you watch, it seems as if NOBODY has a clue as to what the heck they are doing! Husbands in the boat yelling at wives to "Go! Go! Further back!!" and "Stop!!". After 4 or 5 tries and 20 minutes, the boat is off the trailer and soon slamming up against the dock and other boats, tying up valuable dock space as wifey tries to park the rig. (taking up 2 spots, I might add) Meanwhile your average launch time is about 1.5 minutes, from start to finish and you wonder "am I the only person that knows anything here?" I believe you should be required by law to take a boater education course and pass a practical real life test before you can even purchase a boat. Does anyone agree?

We all were new once, I suggest you didn't always launch a boat in 1.5 minutes.

I hear your points, but stop and smell the roses, chillax. Actually, watch the fun at the ramp, I bet there is a laugh or two bound to happen. :D.

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

I did not read all of the posts here, but I will give my 2 cents. I would support a Boating license to operate as I have seen a ton of idiots on the water, these are the ones that have no clue what they are doing. However, I would like to see the age be about 14 and up for the license to operate, as I started operating boats at a very young age. I would agree that it should be like a learners license in that another licensed operator should be in the boat.

As for the ramp, idiots, smart**sses, know-it-alls, newbies and drunks will always be a problem, just have to deal with them and do your best to educate the ones that will listen.

Not to totally change the subject, but I will go one step farther on license and education for drivers in general. I think that there should be an endorsement on a drivers license for towing a trailer over a certain length/weight. I also think that a standard car license should not be sufficent enough to drive a large Motorhome. I have seen to many people get into major trouble and cause all kinds of traffic issues by having large trailers (camper, 5th wheel, horse, boat, etc.) and large RVs that really have no clue how to handle them. But they are legal according to a Class C (in Georgia, under 26,000 lbs) license.

There is my big gripe...

I absolutely agree, there are plenty of laughs to be had, sometimes. But others, it's time to hit the water and get to the drinking spot before it's too crowded.

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

the prevailing attitude is: I don't need an education course but everyone else does.

Therein lies the problem.

But I'll say this about a lot of the courses: I took the hunter safety course with my daughter when she wanted to get her license. There wasn't anything taught there I didn't know, and hadn't taught her (except black powder and archery-the only questions she missed). So I don't know how much good they'd do; the ones who need it are not likely to listen.

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

I've already said my piece about the license, so nothing on that.

I will say, we, myself included, sometimes forget that we were once new to the game also. No matter how long we have been doing it or what age we started. I am guilty of being in a hurry, getting frustrated and not giving the person "in the way" the benefit of doubt or even offering my assistance.
That baing said, I do still offer help to someone who looks like they are having difficulties. But I am very leary of doing so with many people based on "reading the book by its cover", so to speak. I have been berated and scoffed at too many times by someone who took offense to my offer.
I have no problem waiting for the person who is making an HONEST attempt to launch or retrieve. My, and many others, problem is with the person who knows it all and can't do any of it. They are the ones that many threads and posts are written about, an unfortunate byproduct is that the honest guy trying to learn too often gets roped into that category.

A lesson we all should take from this is WE need to help our fellow boater and learn from them as well. Tigether we can make the waters and ramps safer and more fun.

I guess I'm lucky. I boat on Clarks Hill lake AKA lake Thurmond in central Ga. where there are numerous multilane boat ramps and rarely more than 1 or 2 others launching or retrieving at any one time. It is a great place to learn and practice those skills. Everyone was a beginner at some point and it was nice to not have a crowd assessing my skills the first few times out.

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

To answer the question directly, no, I don't feel there should be a license. But then again, I don't really support licensing for anything. I think people tend to feel superior about launching a boat. Once you get good at it, it's fun to look at a guy doing it for the first time and snicker.

What's interesting to me is the reasoning behind this thread. It's not, "I think people should have to get a boating license to prevent injuries and deaths in boating accidents." This thread is about "I think people should get boating licenses because I'm tired of waiting in line that think everyone should be as good at backing up a trailer as I am."

I went to the river yesterday. Usually on a weekday at around noon, it's unlikely that I'll have to share the ramp with anyone. But yesterday there was a guy there with an older boat. He was smack in the middle of the 2 place ramp and he was getting ready to back down. Rather than get annoyed that he was taking up the whole ramp, I assumed he was new to launching and got out to ask if he could use help. The older gentleman, who was in a wheelchair and missing his right arm and leg, explained that it was the younger guys first try at launching and apologized for tying up the ramp. He politely declined my help and told me I could launch ahead of them if I could fit. It was tight, but I managed. As I was backing down, I watched the younger guy lift the old man out of his wheel chair and up over the gunwale of the boat, where the flopped back on a chair. It was an awkward maneuver, but I had to give him credit for not giving up on boating.

I spent a few hours on the water, and when I came back to dock, they were still docked there. The hood was up. They explained that they couldn't get their boat running. I asked if they would like help getting the boat out of the water. Again, the old man politely declined and said he likes the water and would like to float there a while on the dock. I gave them some advice about trouble shooting their problem and hauled my boat out and was on my way. Maybe I should have yelled at them for tying up one spot on the public dock for so long, but I wasn't in that kind of mood I guess.

My point is, not everyone who takes a little longer to launch is rude, or ignorant or stupid. Or uneducated for that matter. Sometimes people are just new to boating, or dealing with some other issue you may not be aware of. Boating is for everyone to enjoy, and some people will always be slower than others at things. It's not worth the stress of getting mad about having to wait at the launch. If it becomes a problem, launch at a different time when not as many people are there. Should we also make people get a license to buy things just because I'm tired of waiting for the little old lady to pay for her loaf of bread with pennies?

Take a deep breath, Relax. Boating is about unwinding. It's ok to giggle at the guy with the shiny new boat who can't back up the trailer. It's ok to giggle because people giggled at you when you were new. It's a rite of passage. Politely offer to help. Maybe the state doesn't educate boaters well enough, but what better way to combat that than by making it your goal to help al those you can learn a bit. If every experienced boater helped just one newbie boater at the ramp once, more people would be good at it and you'd have less of a wait at the ramp.

Anytime I'm losing patience with other people , thats my problem, not theirs.

If they're not "perferct" like me, thats my problem.

It happens more often than I'd like but the positive thing is at least I know it.

There was a time when I didn't have a farkin clue that I was my problem, thats was a miserable time, but it only lasted 45 yrs.

I forget, what was the opening post about now?

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

I believe something needs to be done but not sure what is the best way to go about it.
Too often I see people violating basic rules on the water and law enforcement (Sherrifs) don't appear to notice or ignore it.
On my lake they are looking for just basic violations:
1-drunk driving
2-speeding
3-pfd's on board
4-boaters safety for pwc

but yet I see people pulling tubers or skiers with no one spotting or obvious overloading of boats and when they go by the sherrif's boat they don't even look twice.
The other problem in my area is the limited education opportunities.
Boaters safety is only offered in the winter or very early spring before the season starts, so anyone that buys late spring or summer can't get cert. 'till the following year.

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

All I will say is that when I was new to trailering I brought my boat early on a weekday to the launch and repeatedly launched and retrieved my boat(about 4 hours) and did this weekly until I was competent. If you don't live close to a ramp then at least practice backing the trailer around in a parking lot. Make sure you do everything you can possibly do before you get to the ramp. Lets face it free time is getting shorter and shorter and If I have 4 hours for boating and I spend 1.5hrs at the ramp then there is a problem.

I'm torn on the requirement of boaters education because I'm not so sure about the added taxes required for enforcement. I would like to see boaters education pushed by dealers and made easily available to the public similar to inspections(even at the lake/wherever). Maybe a booth setup on a Saturday morning at the most popular launch site for a Q&A and literature.

Yea we need more government licensing...seems courses and licensing did alot for those who drive on paved roads...leave it alone.

Everyone purchasing a boat or renewing their registration should be required to write an essay on, what a "NO WAKE" sign really means.

My wife and I ate lunch at the water's edge at a local marina today, and we watched people come into the marina. More people, by a good margin, came in with a wake behind them

Their should be a license to breed.

:D Living near Baltimore City, I could not agree more!!!!!

I have taken the MD boater ed course, and much like everyone says about the one in WA, ramp ops are not really covered. That much said, I also took drivers ed when I first started driving a car, and no amount of class time can teach you what years of practice and a little common sense can.

Re: Should Boater Education be Required to Buy?

NO!

it's s'posed to be a free country, stop tryin to tell me what I can do with my freedom or how to do it! All those "stupid" uneducated, uninitiated, and so forth have a right to be that way whether we like it or not.

If you don't like waiting for people to use a public ramp, then buy your own piece of waterfront property with a ramp on it and have it to yourself, or drive to a ramp in some out of the way place (I usually do this...). Chances are the morons taking forever (or learning much as some of us did) paid taxes that support the ramp being there just as the rest of us did.

and yea, there are times at the boat launch I want to just tell them to move over and do it for them, or on the water where I'd like to start popping off rounds at em... but that's whan I need to smile, take a deep breath and wave.

nuff said... horse so dead possums crawlin out when you kick it....
