Should I get this 1993 50 hp Evinrude for 800?

Hi guys, this is a crosspost from Johnson section. Just wanted an opinion from fellow starcrafters

Hi Guys. I am thinking about buying this guy:

Wanted to know some opinions. It has trim&tilt, VRO, controls. It has the parts motor from wich the CDI unit is missing and the motor is seized.

Compression is according to the owner 120 on both cylinders. I will check it anyways.

The only bad thing is that the current owner never started it, I do not know if it runs or not.

So what do you guys think? I think it is not a bad deal for 800, but who knows.....

I would be a little worried about the big AS IS at the end of the ad. I have found when someone stresses that point it is for good reason. I think if I were you I would keep looking.

Gets some muffs for ten bucks and start it up!

You can even pull start those!

If it won't start...I would pay 800 for it...

Personaly I would pass, you could just easly be out 800 dollars. Unless your a mechanic. I would not buy any motor that does not run to my satisfaction.

Too late, I got it
I checked the comression on it and even with the pull start it was about 110 on both cylinders.
I figured that if it does not run I will sell it for same or more money anyways. Especially with the fact that it has parts motor.
In my area people are asking 1000+ for the 60-70's motors.

I probably would have waited for a larger motor but that one should be a good runner.

Compresson - Fuel - Spark thats all you need to get started. Good luck glad you did a compression chech should be good to go. do not run without water to it, even for a second as pump impeller will be toast.

Obviously, I am still dizzy from the ecstacy of finally getting the motor, tilt trim, and drive on the Holiday dialed in yesterday....

My problem was I bought a motor in "AS IS" condition!!

Yes! $700 boat, $375 motor, $100 alternator rebuild, $100 carb rebuild, $1200 Alpha One Complete Drive Unit, $350 for a mechanic to help me

Purrs like a kitten - that about sums up my "AS IS" experience

Seriously - back to the thread. If it doesn't run I would assume the worse. If you have good compression - the only thing separating you from a good motor is money and luck. If you are lucky - then no $.

I would - other than start it - if possible:

1. Open the outdrive and check its condition - are all the gears clean? Is there positive water flow?
2. Check the alt for charging.
3. Check for spark.
4. Check condition of wiring.
5. Are the cables and controls there, in good condition and the right length

All those fixes are 100-300 bucks....each

I bought an 80 HP merc off ebay and had NO problems - ran like a beast and started up in half a crank.

Wish I had 800 for an as is motor...but sounds like you have a good beginning. I am a mechanic (shade tree since the 60's) and would not hesitate to get one that needs rebuilt IF the price was right and parts availabe that cost less than than national debt. Good luck with her.

Jim, I was looking for the nice Evinrude, but prices bite here (1500+!!!!). And taht was for the 70's motor in the best case. So when I saw this one I figured taht i can sell it in the heartbit if the cost of repairs in too much. I checked lowerend and it seems to be shifting and working fine (i turned the motor and it turned in proper direction). The issue that I am facing already in the abscence of the key for controls. Thatw as a bummer, but I am thinking of taking the lock apart and making it "universal" to use ANY key. Possibly it is one of the reasons why PO did not even tried starting it.

Plus having another parts motor helps. It has almost all parts except for 1 carb and couple small things here and there.

The issue that I am facing already in the abscence of the key for controls. Thatw as a bummer, but I am thinking of taking the lock apart and making it "universal" to use ANY key. Possibly it is one of the reasons why PO did not even tried starting it.

Call your local evinrude dealer, they can sell you a replacement key for cheap. There are only a dozen or so different keys for those control boxes.

btw, that 3cyl looper is a great motor. I've got three of them in the 70hp version. Plenty of folks on here can help you through any mechanical issue you may have.

I recently bought a spare key from my local Merc dealer...cost me $4.77

They had 5 huge rings and told me good luck finding one that works

Well...the second one I checked fit perfectly and cranked the starter

I know they sell replacemet keys, can also get a New switch with a New Key. ( then the owner wont be so quick to come over and borrow the boat, not that boats are that hard to hot wire.. ) hmmm....
