i was just wondering if i should keep the floatation in my boat? i dont know if i should just pull it out and make it storage or if i should finish the original job at hidding it. please let me know what you think about that. and also i started to tear up the floor out of her and found that there is foam "boards" on each side of the stringer. what are these for and do i need to replace them or just do away with them?? the stringer is nice and sturdy. ohh yeah sorry what you are looking at is a 1978 glastron cvx16. thanks TOOCAN

The foam is there for a resson. All MFG's are required to install flotation.

Now that you own the boat, it's your choice.

I'll never go out without mine.

Toocan-
I just signed up to the site and this is my first post.
Looks like you will at least be re-doing the floor anyway. If the stringer foam isn't wet leave it alone. Fix the floor and move forward. RE: Storage -Can you crarefully take it out (cut some of the wood) splash her and see how she looks feels reacts. You can't have enough storage. I'm in the middle of a total gut out and rebuild of my 17ft bowrider hull. New stringers, glass, rectangular foam, pool noodles, from the store. Putting the glass on the floor tomorrow. I will post it all with pic's soon.

well im glad i got to break your post virginity!!! i do realize that it is not a law to not have floatation. i also know i own the boat. i grew up in boats and the local lake that we have all the fun in is popular and i never seen a boat needing floatation. i was just wondering if it was like not having proper tire pressure or if it was like not having lug nuts?? anyway i guess i will just make it look a little better and hope it is unnecessary. thanks and i will use the plug just in case the docks are full. Re: should i keep this??????

toocanshan,
Foam is a highly debated subject, with lots of individual opinions.
Some manufacturers used it for primarily flotation others used it for both flotation and a structural component. I'm not sure with your boat which is the case.
I can only tell you that I will be putting foam back into mine.:p
One thing I will say is that if you decide to put the 2 part foam back into your boat, make sure that you seal it, any place that you cut or tear it. Foam forms a natural skin when it cures. if you cut, tear, or break that skin it needs to be sealed.
You also need to make sure any wood is sealed really good too.:D
I hope this helps.

Re: should i keep this??????

i was thinking that i would use the pink stuff from lowes, if any. on the floor i mean. is that 2-part foam or what?? i am going to let the flotation in and just finish it off for looks. ive heard someone say that they put the foam in the floor to block out some of the sound??? does this help?? i can see if you did something to ride smoother "with a cvx16" but how much noise is maid? sounds like there was something wrong with this guys hull. i do not think the foam under my floor adds any kind of strength and there is already flotation in the rear of the boat. i dont know what should i do. im the kind of guy that someone has to tell what to do, opinions just confuse me. thanks guys TOOCAN

The foam in your boat only adds to the floatation if you sink the boat. It's there to prevent the dead space below the floor from filling with water in the event that the boat takes on water. I does not add flotation if the boat is floating on the surface as it should be. That being said, it might be better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. If your boat does get swamped it will keep it at the surface. Provided it's not too loaded with gear.

Looks like there used to be a sliding panel, curtain, or something there to hide it.

Re: should i keep this??????

it came with the original seating and you can imagine what that looked like. the bench seat that was there did hide the underside of the rear deck, but you had to remove it to get to the batt. and the t\t setup. so im just going to build a bench that seats 3 instead of 2 and it will lean forward to open up that whole rear end to make it easier to access.
