Should I retire. Update

Thank you to everyone for your replies and insights. I've finally made up my mind and here are my reasons.

First, an admission or acknowledgement of my occupation. I am a Pharmacist and work 3rd shift for a major drug chain. The company I've worked with for 21.4 years has just been doing "stupid" things for the last 5 years . I'm tired of trying to play their game.

At 15 years of service the employee benefits booklet states that the employee is eligible for 4 weeks vacation. That translates into 20 days. I always thought a week was 7 days but for vacation purposes a week is 5 days. Our weeks' schedule is posted for a 7 day period. Go figure.
We must "apply" for our vacation requests for the 2008 year by November 30th of 2007. That means I have to know every single event that I may have to request time off for one year in advance. I have never had all 4 weeks requested granted. My requests for 2008 were two requests accepted and two denied. I can then request another 2 weeks time period but that is futile as all weeks are already taken in our district. So short story, I do not get four weeks off after 21.4 years service and seniority.

You customers need to be more civil. It is not my fault that your insurance company needs a prior authorization from your doctor for your new medication. Why would you think profanity and threats directed at me and our staff will change what your insurance company requires. I have been polite and honest with you, and I expect the same in return.

Third shift is 80 hours in 7 days. One week on, one week off. I'm 58.5 years young. I can no longer work those hours and have a life. Yeh, the week off is nice and that is what has driven my decision to leave the work force.

I might change my mind in a year or two and return to work in a different setting but for now I plan to work through January 2008 and call it quits. The benefits for staying with the company adds up to nothing. I've saved from my thirty years of Pharmacy practice and now I wish to reap the rewards.

Please wish me and my wife good luck and good health.

Good luck and good health to you and the Mrs.

WOOHOO! Only 1 1/2 more months of working and then it will be time to chase Momma around the house all day and when you get bored with that, you can go fishing! Either way you probably won't catch anything! HA! :D

Enjoy your decision and make the best of it - maybe you can get a job as a lure tester??? That would be the ideal retirement job - "But honey, I HAVE to go fishing today, its my job, remember?"

Congratulations Tyme. You thought it out well and mad a good decision. I wish you and yours the best. You are right, you can always go back to pushing drugs(different company I hope) if you get bored. Enjoy the life, and do some good for others with some of that time.

Congratulations!

In many ways, I envy you. I turned 58, and will probably be involuntarily retired by spring. Want to work, but the Michigan governor keeps driving jobs out of state. Move? I suppose we could, but it's be tough. I changed careers a dozen years ago, and have been able to rebuild finances a bit since then, but not enough to retire.

Back to topic -

My brother-in-law is a pharmacology professor at Ferris. He's always done a little part-time pharmacy work over the years for additional income, and he can set his own hours -- he either takes the shift offered or he doesn't. No problem. Working for a large chain (or any large corporation) cuts off a lot of your options. There should be plenty of others around... even if it's part-time.

I always knew you was a dope pushing dude. You should be ashamed of yourself. ;)

Congrats on the decision. It sounds to me like you needed to find a new boss and company though. Maybe by late spring you'll find some parttime pharm. work to keep ya occupied.

Congratulations and best wishes, T2F.

May your retirement be as pleasant and rewarding, but not as expensive prior to Medicare, as mine has been.

Good luck in your retirement. I would have quit that job long ago with that crappy vacation rule. Amazing they can find anyone to work for them.

I know these pharmacy guys are worked to death. I got a little POed at the pharmacy one time, not because of them, but because my doc prescribed Cipro XL (extended release). The problem was, I just switched insurance and it was all screwed up. I had to pay full price on the Cipro XL and it was 400 bucks. How the heck is someone without insurance supposed to afford that. And Cipro XL isnt magic, its just regular Cipro with a coating. So my argument was more with the drug company/doctor conspiracy, than the pharmacy. Drug company reinvented an old drug and then charged a ton of money for it, and then got the doctor convinced to prescribe it.

How do we afford drugs like that without insurance? It's simple we don't. When I go to my local home town ,privately owned, pharmacist if he sees that it's a expensive drug he calls me aside and talks to me about it. Then I call the Doctor back and we can usually find a less expensive drug that will do much the same thing. My pharmacists is a good guy.

My doctors are usually purty good about not prescribing too many expensive drugs. I live in a area where the income level is quite low. They know this.Besides I'm only 43. I haven't needed many prescription drugs yet.
