Say WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Gearing and gear ratios are the same thing.

:D LMAO!!! :D

Told you lots of people got it wrong!

From Dictionary.com:
gear ratio
?noun Machinery. 1. the ratio of the rotational speeds of the first and final gears in a train of gears or of any two meshing gears.

From Dictionary.com:
gearing
?noun Machinery. 1. an assembly of parts, esp. a train of gears, for transmitting and modifying motion and torque in a machine.

"Gear Ratio" is simply the numerical ratio between two gears (or a complete gear train).

"Gearing" refers to the sequence of gears that you assemble to transmit power at some desired level of torque or RPM. You trade RPM for torque. For example, if you need twice the RPM, you will have half the torque.

LOW GEAR refers to a low RPM, high torque final output. This is a HIGH RATIO.

HIGH GEAR refers to a high RPM, low torque final output. This is a LOW RATIO.

From Wikipedia:
Corvette gearing example:

A 2004 Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 with a six-speed manual transmission has the following gear ratios in the transmission:

Gear________ Ratio
1st ________ 2.97:1
2nd ________ 2.07:1
3rd ________ 1.43:1
4th ________ 1.00:1
5th ________ 0.84:1
6th _________ 0.56:1
reverse______ 3.28:1

See how LOW GEAR (1st) has a HIGH RATIO (2.97:1)?

Notice how HIGH GEAR (6th) has a LOW RATIO (0.56:1)?

GEARING and GEAR RATIOS are definitely not the same thing. If you go to someone and tell them that you want your truck geared LOWER for more pulling power, they're going to put HIGHER RATIO gears into the rear end.

When your car is in HIGH GEAR, the transmission is using LOW RATIO gears to turn the driveshaft.

Re: Should of bought a V6...

I guess I'm thinking in car terms. I'm confused though, if I go from a 3.73 gears in my car to 4.11 I went lower. If I do this on a boat I went higher?

You went to LOWER GEARING by going to a HIGHER RATIO gearset (4.11 is higher numerically than 3.73. The GEAR RATIO is just the number of the teeth on the ring gear divided by the number of teeth on the pinion). Same thing on cars and boats.

We're pretty much all saying the same thing here :D I do a lot of rock crawling and have changed many gear sets.

I would rather have the extra horsepower and not need it. My next boat I will be looking for a V8 and hopefully a fuel injected one.

If having more horsepower meant buying a fuel injected V6 over a carbed V8 then I would absolutely consider that.

Re: Should of bought a V6...

I keep hearing/ reading people talk about their V6's cruising in the mid 50's. Is this correct? I have the 5.0 OMC V8 and I can maybe reach 48 and mine is setup with the right prop and has no issues. Is it true the smaller motors are outduing the V8's? Did I buy the wrong boat for speed?

Sounds like your boat is right on!! If you want a boat for speed get a jet boat that will do 120mph.:D

like my dad said, theres no replacement for displacement :D. i have the 5.0 and love having the extra power there when i need it, mine does 40 mph loaded down and im happy with that.

Re: Should of bought a V6...

In all seriousness, a 305 makes a decent bit more horsepower and torque than a 4.3 and will push a boat a bit faster all other factor being equal. from a performance standpoint, there's really no reason to get a 305 instead of a 350 if the larger displacement engine is available.

most boats that run in the 60s really run 50s... and so on so don't be discouraged - to go much faster in a typical i/o costs increasingly more for every mile an hour especially once you get into the 60s.

My experience has been exactly the same as Tim's.

All in all I am very happy with my 5.0 and wouldn't trade it for the 4.3 and I am sure most people are just talk. It's like the guy who says his boat will do 70 no problem but when you finally get it out there and it is doing 45 he says it's having problems even tho it sounds good. I also forgot that my boat is probably wider than the 16-18 footers with the 4.3 so that right htere is alot more drag on it.

My 5.7 only moves my 5K lb. boat 48mph, maybe I better swap it for a 4.3? :p

Re: Should of bought a V6...

You have to compare the same vintage motors to make a fair comparison, like others have mentioned.
A new 4.3 makes more power than an old type 305 (non-vortec). A new 305 is more powerful than a new 4.3. So, the answer is yes, some v6's are faster than some v8's if we are comparing old to new. Just because it?s a bigger engine doesn?t mean its going to be more powerful.
The replacement for displacement is efficiency. This is proven by the way manufactures produce engines. Sometimes instead of making a bigger engine, they will just improve it. Vortec heads are a great example. My friend has an engine that went into a 1920's Duesenburg. It displaces 830ci and it came supercharged from the factory. When new it was rated at 90HP if I recall correctly. Bigger does not mean better.
If everything is equal the bigger engine wins every time though.

45auto, thank you for your very confusing post on gearing. :)

No problem, you think that was bad just wait till the discussion gets around to torque vs horsepower, or whether a small engine or large engine is more efficient. :D

lol, lets hope it doesn?t go there. I?m leaving work in 30 minutes to go catch up on my fishing. Hopefully nobody gets that far ahead in the conversation until I get back, I wouldn?t want to miss it. :D

Re: Should of bought a V6...

OK new question, from what I have heard in this this thread here a new 4.3 with the fuel injection is more powerful or the same as my 5.0 with the carb? Now are they kicking out the same footpounds of Torque? Wouldn't the V8 do better there and wouldn't that make the 5.0 carbed better than the 4.3 fuel injected?

i have never seen published hp/torque curves, but im sure that the 305 has more area under it than the 4.3 .

torque is just a usless quantity calculated from horsepower. horsepower is what really matters:D

and bigger engines are more efficient than smaller ones.
