Sierra fuel pump; which side is inlet and outlet?

I found a replacement fuel pump for my OMC 5.7L engine (in a 1989 Reinell) and it arrived today (they forgot to include the mounting gasket). I see that the fuel inlet and outlet openings are in a different spot than the stock fuel pump so now I need to buy some new fuel lines and rerun them.

My question is which one of these two openings is the inlet and which one is the outlet? Here is the fuel pump I just received, http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=90353F

Also, I have steel lines to and from the fuel pump now. Is there something easier to work with than having new steel lines made somewhere?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hold onto the pump and press on the acuator hold a finger over either hole and see if it suck or blows air.Or mount it and turn the motor over. Then cover a hole.
The hose from the tank is rubber so rubber will work. LOT'S of people just cut the fittings off the old line and put hose over it. Jerry

They either sent the wrong pump or you ordered the wrong pump, there is no reason that you should not be able to get a direct, bolt on replacement....;)
I'm not an OMC guy, but there should be no need to re route anything.....
It is possible that your drive package is not the same year as the hull & I would verify that.....
I'm sure some of the OMC guys will shed more light.....
Is it possible that you are replacing a Mallory pump?......
You can look it up right here on iboats......:)

The one in your link shows what I believe to be a universal type, they are designed to be re-clocked by removing the bottom housing and re-orienting the holes.

You would also have to plumb in your own fittings either from the old pump or find new ones to adapt and mate up to your steel line.

It is probably a good pump, but if it were me I think I would return that one and look for a direct replacement, part of my decision would be based on the fact they did not include the gasket and it is clearly part of the item shown. Also part of my decision is based on keeping the boat close to stock so I would not have to explain as many things to the next person...."It has a new OEM direct replacement fuel pump" versus "I installed a universal fuel pump and plumbed it into the stock fuel line routing..." that kind of thing.
